Castles and Fortresses

**Open to photographers with a ranking outside the top 1000. There are two other 'Castles and Fortresses' contests currently open to other ranks. Take a look at the <a href="https://www.photocrowd.com/leaderboard/">leaderboard</a> for more information on Photocrowd rankings.** A step back in time for this contest, as we explore the buildings that we’ve historically built to protect ourselves and our lands. Wikipedia helpfully tells us that a castle is a type of fortified structure built during the Middle Ages (5th - 15th centuries) predominantly by the nobility or royalty, whereas a fortress was not always a residence for royalty or nobility. Let’s not be too narrow with our definitions, and allow for photos of all kinds of fortified, defensive structures that have been fashioned over the years.
