Collections of Things

February 2024

Everyday objects can make wonderful subjects when approached with fresh eyes. This stack of maps has been transformed into a pleasing arrangement of lines and patterns – splashes of orange seem to appear in just the right places. The square crop works well too.

So much thought has gone into this arrangement: the positioning (and shape) of the spoons, the colour of the spices, the backdrop – everything works well together. The lighting is great and highlights the textures without creating unsightly reflections in the metal. The aperture (f/11) is ideal for keeping everything nice and sharp. It's a lovely shot.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Some collections are made, and we do love collecting things. From pebbles on memorable beach walks to guitars played by rock legends, and not forgetting stamps, coins, pill boxes and a thousand other beautiful, interesting and sometimes bizarre things. Other collections are found on our travels - cars at a vintage rally, lamps for sale at a Turkish bazaar, or a flock of gulls on a roof.

Beautifully composed and wonderfully lit, this picture is a great still life. The positioning of the pumpkins feels just right, with care taken to point the stalks in a way that leads the eye around the frame. The colours are gorgeous too, with great contrast between the blue and orange. My only complaint is that the fabric the objects are sitting on does not seem in-keeping with the rest of the picture – perhaps a few more leaves on the floor would have helped. Other than that, it's pretty faultless!
