Composition - Centred Horizons

August 2024

A beautiful dream-like image with a wonderful soft warm light. The level of silhouetting draws the eye first to the human figure and tree and then to the foggy city in the background. The golden glistening light is subtly contrasted with a hint of blue in the water. A story in a single image that evokes the imagination of a longer tale to be told. Stunning image that is a delight to view.

Timing and positioning are spot on in this image. A beautiful snowy mountain vista on its own, made into a unique work of art with the flight of the helicopter curving up into the sky and back down into the depths of the frame. The centred horizon allows the path of the helicopter to stand out and add extra dimensions to this fantastic scene; not just in height, but time is added to a still image! The photographer has done an exceptional job both on location and in post to create this winning image!

Contrast used to great effect in tones and subject matter. The centred horizon divides the two worlds of birds, those in flight and those at rest. The extra detail of the story, that the birds are standing on ice, adds to the sense of place. Initially one would assume the birds are floating on water! The monochrome is a great treatment of the scene, although I get the feeling it would look lovely in colour too. Beautiful photo!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Strong composition is essential for most photography, and when played well, one of the strongest and most intentional compositions is the dead-centre horizon. It doesn’t always work, depending as it does upon what’s above and below the horizon, and both halves of the image need to be well weighted in relation to each other.
