Documentary in black and white

This visually striking image is the perfect example of a humanist photograph within the documentary tradition. The photographer has correctly focused the attention on the person. We see the human not the system who only sees identity through legitimate paperwork. The tight crop and shallow depth of field means we cannot escape the mans gaze as we the viewer confront the situation he and many others face. Great documentary images make us the viewer engage with the subject and what they maybe going through. We cannot sit on the fence and we must take a stance. That is democracy. Great technique and subtle black and white tones only add to this powerful photograph that makes us look. Well done to the photographer for making this image and getting themselves into the perfect position. Wonderful capture.

This brooding homage to the service men and women of the past is beautifully captured by the photographer. The dark black and white tones and darkened vignetting around the edges bring all the attention towards the individual, wheelchair bound as they themselves pay homage to fallen comrades. The scale of the monument works so well against the slight of the individual and the white hair and top they wear lifts the entire scene. Beautifully captured and seen. Wonderful image that would grace any story in a magazine. Well done.

This wonderful contemporary looking black and white documentary image focuses our attention as much as it does the individual set within the frame. The tight crop allows us to focus on the slightly bowed head in respect of the flag, which is held close to the face. The very subtle soft black and white tones within the image is such a contemporary way of making images in this time and this image reflects the techniques used today. The image can be interpreted in many ways. Respect for the flag and what that constitutes or quiet protest. Not all documentary images have to scream and shout. This quiet introspective image gives us the audience space to think and find out. Stunning and of our time. Very well done.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** To many, documentary photography has an almost spiritual association with monochrome. The history of black and white documentary photography is long and rich, and the focus that monochrome gives to the story being told in the images is powerful and evocative. If nothing else, take some of your favourite colour documentary images from your archive, and see what happens to them when you strip out the colour, and play with the contrast. All subjects are welcome, as is single-colour toning.
