'This is a beautiful photo with lots of atmosphere and beautiful light. The scene is charmingly and expertly staged. The composition is very strong and the crop is well chosen. A cozy scene in an adapted frame. We are sorry that the main motif, girl and lamb, requires too much attention and therefore does not really support the goal of the competition 'windows and doors'. Otherwise, this would be a photo that would definitely fit the top 10. Congratulations ...'

'What is striking here is the control of the incident daylight through the doorway. The photographer made grateful use of this and made perfect use of the beautiful contrast between the dark areas and the beautiful light in the hallway. The light guides the viewer through the photo. This is not an easy recording and it takes a lot of knowledge and skill to balance the room nicely and to show the walls enough details. The composition is perfect. The colors are nicely coordinated. The figures on the wall, the chair and the shoes are intriguing factors that give the photo even more appearance. This is a photo taken by an expert photographer. Congratulations on third place...'

'A photo executed to perfection. The photographer has an excellent sense of balance in composition and geometric proportions. The photo is very balanced. The whole is divided exactly into two equal halves. On the left, the hatch is divided into several squares and on the other side, the door consists of several rectangles. The window contrasts beautifully with the deep blue color and shows a beautiful ornament of eight panes surrounded by four hexagons and four pentagons. Three vertical rectangles on the door break the monotonous surface and thus give an extra dynamism and ensure the beautiful balance. The composition is very well maintained down to the smallest details and all disturbing elements are excluded. This gives the photo a pleasant appearance. The lighting is as it should be and this ensures that all details are clearly visible, even in the dark parts. This is a photographer with a very experienced eye and with a lot of experience. This is evident from the fact that it is not easy to choose a perfect cut-out from an entire wall. Heartfelt congratulations for this deserved winner ... '

'Technically, this photo is a gem. It is a textbook example of controlling photographic light in very difficult circumstances because of the difficult backlight. The photographer gratefully uses this and created a photo with an immense atmosphere. To conjure the light so beautifully on the horse and the wall in the right proportion is quite an art. The details of the hair come into their own. The light on the wall is also necessary, otherwise the window would float in a black area. The bright spot of light at the top of the window provides a perfect counterbalance to the composition. This photographer masters the art of controlling the light, because it is quite a challenge to transform this image into an art photo in these circumstances. Incidentally, 'light' is the basis on which photography is built. Congratulations on the second place.'

This photo immediately stands out because of the pleasant colors and beautiful, soft contrasts between the yellow and blue. In addition, the photographer has an eye for the symmetrical balance in the composition. This is perfectly reproduced here and also applied in the chosen crop of the photo. The lamp accentuates the center of the image so that the symmetry between the left and right halves is better reflected. The motifs in the frames, the door and the windows give an extra point of attention, which makes the photo more attractive. Congratulations…

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** Doors and windows are fascinating subjects to photograph, not just because of their symbolic associations and aesthetic qualities, but because of light. Light is perhaps the most important element in any photograph, but the light that comes in (or out) through an opening in a building is often different to its environment. This presents both challenges and opportunities for photographers. Give it a try.
