You will see among the entries to this competition that there are numerous shots of dogs in snow but this one really stood out. It has a connection with the viewer. It's up close and personal and evokes an emotion. From a practical point of view photographing something black in a white environment is very difficult to get right and this shot keeps good tone throughout. It's an engaging shot and has been framed really nicely, the nose is dead centre which is perfect.
This is the second drone shot selected in the Top Ten. I love the graphic quality of this image, and the wonderful pop of red which jumps out amidst the monochromatic car tracks in the snow. It's what absolutely makes the image so successful. It has a really fun element and is beautifully composed. The situation / environment was either an opportunity very well taken or if the photographer created the circles then it was a brilliant concept. Fab work.
What a magical photograph which you could easily imagine on a book cover. Beautifully executed and technically great. The colours are wonderful with the striking pop of red. The composition is good too with good space around the subject to give enough sense of the location but not too much . I get a slight sense it may have been constructed / manipulated and done very well. It would be interesting to have had some info as to how it was shot etc. overall a wonderful shot.
This shot has a lovely energy and sense of fun and anticipation. It's bang on brief. The composition is good and the yellow / orange colour pop of the running child is great. The captured moment / timing of shot is good too. It's fun to experiment with where you shoot from sometimes so maybe try out getting lower down etc. but appreciate this had to be captured quickly ... you must have been hot on their heels with a 50mm lens. Lovely image, well done.
This photo has a lovely painterly quality to it due to the slight movement that shows in the dogs fur. It has an unusual light quality too which is hard to work out. There is a light on the dog which doesn't seem to hit the surrounding snow so not sure if this was done in post or a very slight fill in flash but however it was done the resulting image is great. Leaving a good amount of space around the subject works, and really makes this shot. It's very nicely composed. If the dog had been centre of frame or filled the frame it just wouldn't have had the same effect. The big sky and horizon work well and I think the image success is helped by working well to the rule of thirds which is often visually successful. .
Congratulations... what a fabulous shot. The concept is really really wonderful. There are 2 drone shots in the top 10 and as a relatively new world which has opened up to photographers it's so great to see it's success. The image has been thought through. The crop is successful and due to the slight letterbox proportions you get quite a filmic quality, giving it the feeling of perhaps an opening sequence to a film. I love that it has a monochromatic feel with only a hint of colour in the car and on the girls jacket. It feels like twilight. There is a real ambience, to the photo and you can almost hear the silence in the image. No cars have moved and only a few foot prints lead out of one of the houses. It feels relevant to the times and is beautifully observed. Well done. There has been no over enhancing, brightening, or contrasting in post production and so it retains a muted quality which adds to the mood of the image. Really lovely shot.
Kids having fun in the snow was a common subject matter for this competition with lots of entries but this image really stood out due to it's quality of capture, colour and focus. The framing is really lovely with the girl just off centre and the moment captured is wonderful with the snow in movement and the timing is perfect. The colour saturation is good.. it's not been over enhanced and as the photographer stated in the technical difficulties it is hard to capture snow without blowing out the highlights. Certainly hasn't happened here and it's been very well considered. A lovely moment with great energy and colour.
This is a fun shot which is very well framed and well exposed and has a lovely energy. The colours / styling works well and the model is great. Photographing when it's actually snowing is difficult if you use auto focus because the focus will jump to the flakes sometimes. It can be worth popping the camera on manual focus if that's the case so you guarantee the sharpness on the subject and also be mindful when hand holding at a slowish shutter speed when on a long lens as that can be tricky too. Nice shot .. just needed a bit more focus.
Lovely work with a great energy and life to it.. This image completely hits the brief 'fun in the snow' and was captured at exactly the right moment. The sheer delight and atmosphere in the image is great. Composition is good, as well as focus... there have been a few shots entered where the lens has jumped to a snowflake making the face drop slightly soft, but this is spot on. The image could have been a tiny bit less contrasting (perhaps it was a filter ? or in post production?) but it's a really delightful lovely shot
The tones and colour palette in this shot are wonderful. There's a lovely sense of anticipation. I love seeing the door frame in shot as you get a great sense of place and it gives the image a good narrative. Perhaps thinking about where you are shooting from sometimes is good. If the camera (eyeline) was slightly lower it would have straightened the door framing and brought the view slightly lower nearer to the Childs height? We all tend to grab shots from where we are standing or sitting but if you've got time it's nice to explore the angles and viewpoints. Good focus and exposure.
Well as Robert Capa said if it's not good enough you're not close enough... this is certainly close enough. What a fabulous shot. Full of energy and feeling and it evokes the atmosphere beautifully. You can almost hear the race and their hooves. I like the fact you don't see the whole of the front reindeer.. you're immersed in the scene / event. Good colour, capture, moment, framing, focus ... great shot !
This is a super crisp, clean fresh very lovely image of New York. It's been well composed with the proportions in the image of people to buildings working beautifully. There are good verticals on the buildings too which is great. It's visually a busy shot with lots going on but with the wonderful light and blue toned colour palette mean it's not overly busy for the eye and is really well observed and captured. It's often tempting to over sharpen or contrast an image sometimes so I'm glad it wasn't enhanced any more.. It's a really lovely shot.. well done.
