Farming and Food Production

March 2024

Great shot and very different from anything else entered in this competition. Love the backlighting illuminating the fish as they hang out to dry - nice composition too. You have done well to capture all the detail as it's very easy to blow the highlights. Great work.

I love this evocative image of young Mundari boy with a cattle herd captured as the dawn breaks and the day begins. The soft hues of early morning, light the scene beautifully. A really outstanding image which well deserves the number one spot. You did well to hold the image sharp at 1/30. Congratulations!

As we traverse the countryside we are surrounded by farming, but how often do we stop to think about what goes into it, and how our food is produced. And how often do we then turn our cameras on it, visit farms and fields, talk to farmers, and get under the skin of this vital industry? And food production doesn’t finish at the farm. The processing and production of food is a huge industry, although one more likely to be housed in a building and so less accessible, but no less worthy of our attention. All phases and types of farming and food production are included within this contest theme.

Wow what a shot - the light - the detail and composition go to make this a real stand out image. The dark brooding sky makes a strong contrasting background to the man's face, lit directly by the sun. You did very well with the exposure - the detail is all there. It's very easy to blow the highlights in these situations. Excellent work!

A really nice image well captured - it looks like it could have been taken in the 1940s were it not for the fact it was shot on a Canon 5D MK4 ! I love the detail you have captured in the strong sunlight - the brooding rainclouds making a great contrasting background. I love the low viewpoint too, giving the picture real energy. Nice B&W conversion in post - great work!

There were plenty of entries of wheat fields in this competition as you would imagine but this is the only one which captures all of it's beauty in the last fading light of the day. The clouds are beautifully lit as the moon rises overhead. Great capture with lots of lovely detail - excellent work.

Great drone shot giving us a fantastic birds eye view. Lots of excitement and drama as jets of water fire across this geometric scene. The sunlight capturing all the detail beautifully. It also shows the sheer scale of these farming projects - amazing!

A really beautiful close up shot which really caught my attention. The detail of the hair and eye is fantastic giving you a real sense of the animal - you don't often get an opportunity to study at such close quarters. The flash of the yellow tag contrasting well with the black and white of the cow's hair. Looking at this picture reminds us what a magnificent creature the humble farm cow is and deserves more of our respect. Great work!

A love this image with it's converging lines - the slightly overhead angle capturing all the fine detail from from front to back using a small aperture. The subtle green hues working really well against the brooding sky. A great shot - beautifully composed.

A really nice composition - love the muted colours and detail of this picture. The splash of red from the poppies contrasting beautifully against the golden field of wheat. Sometimes it's easy to walk past this kind of image but taking time and getting down low brings it's rewards. Nice work!

A really beautiful shot of a teenage boy collecting lotus flowers in Cambodia. It's a really nice moment and captures the young man working hard in a beautiful field of flowers. The harsh sunlight can be a problem in these situations but you have captured all the detail and drama - excellent work.

There's no information about this image but looks to have been taken in Bahrain of a local farmer pulling beetroot and trimming the roots. I love the colours and super fine detail of the man squatting low to the ground, concentrating all his efforts to the job in hand. Great observation beautifully shot.

A beautiful shot of a herd of sheep on a crisp winters day as the sun rises. I love their curiosity as they all look towards the camera - great composition with lots of lovely detail captured at f9. You can almost touch the frosted ground - fantastic atmosphere -excellent shot.

Love this shot - got some great energy in there and the light is beautiful. The low angle is working well and captures a real sense of place and time as the sheep rumble by. The super fast shutter speed stopping all the action- great work!

Beautiful shot - a vast sea of wheat stretching out in the summer sun. I love the rich deep golden colour you have captured in the bright light - great exposure too. Nice observation and fine composition and detail. Great work!

A lovely shot of this young lamb with what I imagine are the parents. The sun light picking out the fine detail of these beautiful animals. For me it really brings home how we really need to give these humble farm creatures more of our respect. A really beautiful image well observed. Narrowly missing out on the the top 10 spot.

I love this shot - it feels almost like a still from a dream! Great composition - loving the black and white conversion - it really suits this image giving it a timeless quality. The fast shutter speed and f5.6 aperture have captured the moment perfectly. Great work.

Such a beautiful tender image of this new born lamb and mother. The detail is amazing and gives a real sense of love and caring, it's difficult not to feel moved by such a scene. The close crop also adds power to the image too - a well deserved top 10 spot.

A simple yet pleasing image - I love the contrasting colours of the red and blue with the white clouds scudding across the sky. It's a quiet English scene evoking times gone by. The fast shutter speed has stopped all the action as the farmer turns to adjust his plough. Nice observation well composed.
