Landscapes with water

Comfortably into 2nd, and it's easy to see why. Vestrahorn is a bit of a supermodel that photographs well from any angle, but the real win here is that receding curve of surf drawing the eye along the black sand to those saw-toothed peaks catching the last of the light. Lovely restraint on the sky, too. My only gentle nudge: the brightest patch of wet sand is flirting with pure white, so easing that back a touch would safeguard every last scrap of detail. Smashing stuff.

Agonisingly, just outside the ten — and only because it shares its star with your runner-up. On its own merits it's a beauty: that warm dawn light kissing the peak, mirrored in the wet sand, with a well-placed rock anchoring the foreground. Calm, considered and technically clean. Were it the only Vestrahorn in the set it would be higher — such is the cruelty of landing two crackers from the same spot. A gentle graduated filter on the sky keeps it nicely balanced. Lovely work, and no shame in being pipped.

The light is very much the hero — that shaft catching the waterfall's spray lends the whole scene a soft, luminous glow that's genuinely lovely. The drystone wall makes a solid, characterful foreground to lead you in. Exposure on the falls is nicely restrained, bright but not blown. It's a busy scene, mind, so the eye has a fair bit to sort through; a slightly tighter crop to simplify around that beam of light might make it sing even louder. Atmospheric and warmly done.

Another foggy stunner, which rather gives away your love of atmosphere. Those moss-draped trees looming out of the murk have a wonderfully eerie, primeval feel, and the still water beneath doubles the drama. Beautifully soft and moody. The only reason it sits here rather than higher is that it treads similar ground to your other misty frames — on its own it's a lovely thing. A touch more tonal separation in the densest fog would add a little depth. Gorgeously eerie.

Rounding out the podium in 3rd, and what a mood-piece. The mist is doing the heavy lifting here, peeling those draped, mossy trees into soft layers and lending the whole thing a painterly, almost fairy-tale depth. Warm autumn tones sing against the cool fog beautifully. It's all handled with a delicate touch, which is precisely right for a scene this fragile. If anything, a hair more contrast on the nearest reflection would anchor the foreground a smidge better — but it's a gorgeously atmospheric frame. Lovely seeing.

Something genuinely different — those discs of pancake ice make a mesmerising foreground I've simply not seen a hundred times before, which counts for a great deal. The pastel sunset is delicate rather than gaudy, suiting the icy calm. Lovely wide-angle work to give the ice that receding rhythm. If I'm honest, the horizon is sitting a touch high, so a hair more sky would let that pretty light breathe — but full marks for hunting out a fresh subject. Cool in every sense of the word.

A quietly gorgeous autumn morning, this — the little island with its lone tree gives you a natural focal point, the mist softens the far shore into layers, and the warm reflection is handled with a lovely gentle hand. It's a scene that rewards patience, and you've clearly waited for the light. My only whisper: reflection and reality are almost equally bright, so a touch more weight to the real trees would stop the eye wobbling between the two. Serene and well seen.

The one challenge with an icon this photographed is standing apart from the crowd — a moodier sky or lower light might one day hand you the definitive version. But this is a clean, accomplished take.

If I'm being fussy, a whisper more light lifted into the darkest rock would tease out a touch more texture — but honestly, it's a proper cracker and a worthy winner.

That winding channel does a grand job of walking you through the frame to the old boat, which lends a welcome touch of story and scale, while the big soft sky suits the flat calm of low tide. It's an understated subject and you've treated it honestly, which I rather like. If anything, it's crying out for slightly more dramatic light to lift it from "pleasant" to "wow" — but as a study in composition and calm, it's tidy work.

That foreground of golden marram grass bent flat gives real energy and leads you down into the moody bay, while the little burst of light beneath the storm adds just enough hope to the drama. Grand dynamic-range handling to hold both the bright sky and the shadowed rock. The grass is perhaps a whisker warm for my taste, so nudging it cooler might feel a touch more natural — but it's a spirited, characterful shot.

A proper slice of Scottish drama. The Buachaille is showing off under that glowering sky, and you've used the tumbling river as a leading line straight to the famous wee hut — classic composition, well executed. The long exposure gives the water movement without stripping all its texture, and the tonal balance across a tricky high-contrast scene is grand. It's a much-photographed view, so originality is the only real hurdle; a side-lit or stormier moment might one day set yours apart. Smashing conditions, well caught.
