Markets and Bazaars

December 2023

A lovely moment of a market trader carry a box on his head through a busy Indian street. A slice of everyday life beautifully captured. The wide angle lens has captured loads of detail throughout the image - great work!

A very different image to anything else chosen in this top ten but a lovely addition all the same. No people but a close up image of punnets of delicious looking strawberries. I love the vibrant pop art colours in this shot - super saturated with the bright red fruit filling all of the frame. Great work!

Excellent street shoot of a market trader walking at pace towards the photographer carrying four dead birds in each hand. The man has purpose in his stride and a determined expression which I love. The background is dropped out with a wide aperture and the scene is lit by daylight. My only suggestion for this kind of street scene is to use a faster shutter speed otherwise excellent work.

A amazing shot beautifully framed and observed. Despite being very graphic there is a beauty in the symmetry of the hanging dead birds. The green wall and dark interior contrasting well with the yellow flesh. There's also an additional dimension of the three figures in the shot with one women looking directly to camera. Excellent image.

A fantastic portrait of a market trader looking directly at camera - a really powerful image beautifully captured. I love all the detail and colours illuminated by the direct lighting from the bare overhead bulbs - great composition - great work!

A lovely moment beautifully observed. A market trader organising his stock of bananas stops for a moment to look at the camera. I love the colours and the scene is nicely illuminated by the outside daylight. My only suggestion would be to use a faster shutter speed combined with a higher ISO for those darker situations.

A really lovely portrait of a market street seller taking a few moments to stop for the camera. Her gentle face beautifully observed. The photographer has done well to keep the image sharp at 1/30 second. My only suggestion would be to open up the aperture and increase the shutter speed next time. Excellent work!

A really beautiful image of a Vietnamese women talking to a customer. The light probably coming from an overhead bulb illuminates her face perfectly. It's a really close up street shot which I love - you feel like you're there right in the scene - excellent shot well captured.

Flower sellers in Guatemala - such an amazing shot and a real standout image for me. I love all the different moments happening it makes for great viewing. The wide angle lens and narrow aperture has captured lots of fantastic detail. I love the women at the top with her arms crossed surveying the scene below. The photographer has gone largely unnoticed except for two people- can you spot them!? Great work.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Whether it is your local farmer’s market, or Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, around the world, markets and bazaars provide a buzz of energy, a myriad of scenes of local commerce, and produce being hawked and bartered for. They are one of the best representations of that areas culture and cuisine, and provide a glimpse into the world of the local people - what they buy, how they shop and ways they interact with each other.

I love this portrait of a young market trader in Ghana. Such a powerful image it really stops you in your tracks. The bright red of her top combined with blue and the dropped focus in the background really grabs your attention. Her expression is difficult to work out which keeps the viewer wondering. Excellent work well done.
