The various elements in this image all come together very well. The upright plant emerging from it's base and crossing the horizon is well placed on a third. The footprints lead in from the corner of the frame right up to the plant. Strong side lighting creates an important shadow to the left and also shows up the texture of the sand. I could live with this on my wall! Great image.

The lighting coming in from the left hand side has clearly defined the shape of the dunes by casting shadows which are alsointeresting in their own. The side light also shows up the texture of the wind blown sand. Another interesting feature is the small band of clouds which form a perfect foil for the dunes. The only minor crit is the top left hand corner which is a tad weak.

Meet the judge

A classic ' Pen and ink ' graphic image which has very strong compositional elements. The zigzag starts in the bottom left hand corner and then the eye follows it through the picture space to exit at the opposite corner. The position of the right hand tree on the corner is so right for the composition. Everything just gels!

I want to see your best landscape and seascape photographs in glorious black and white. Animals and people can be included but these should not dominate the scene.

I think the 'pen and ink' drawing quality of this is perfect for this image. The arrangement of the trees with the eye coming in from the left and passing the six tall ones then reaching the smaller one acting as a stop. The hint of a hedge (?) just beyond the treeline adds depth to the image,

The sombre lighting is attractive in it's own right but also sits very well with the title! The side lighting adds to the drama and mystery of the scene. I feel that the weight of the image is focussed a tad too much to the right. That could be corrected by a small trim off the left edge. I think that would improve the balance of the composition and also reuduce or even remove the highlight on the edge of the image. Moody stuff!

I love the simplicity of this image. There is a strong lead in from the bottom left hand corner that takes us round to the well placed upright which nicely crosses the horizon. The long exposure has smoothed out any movement in the sea but amazingly the seagulls are still sharp!
