This was a difficult contest to judge, trying to strike a balance between a drab subject and a great capture. Here that balance seems perfect. On their own, beach huts can be anything but mundane, with their vivid colours and stunning beachside locations. Here though, set on the end of a vast stretch of featureless marshland, the subject becomes ideal for a mundane theme. The weather is spot-on, a plain grey sky, echoing the landscape and conveying a rather sombre mood. Processing has been very well controlled to ensure ssturation is kept low and avoiding the creation of something too conventionally beautiful. Congratulations on your winning image.
This is such a mundane subject I love it! The relatively high-key effect suits the subject, bringing clean lines and bold colours, nicely contrasting against the white walls. The regimented arrangement of wires, switch/boxes and pipe perfectly suit the theme, and the elements have all been carefully composed. Well done on your top ten placing.
This is such a drab and mundane scene it had to be a contender for my top ten as soon as I saw it. The composition leads the eye into the frame, maybe to something more enticing than the scene before us? I love the inclusion of the little message painted on the tarmac, maybe a hint that there really is something more around the corner, both literally and metaphorically! The flat lighting and dull colour palette suits the subject of mundane to a tee. Well done on your top ten placing.
A rare sight indeed to see a phone box actually with a phone still in it. Just looking at this image brings a real blast from the past, as I am transported back to the heavy pull of the door, the sounds and that unforgettable aroma of the public phond box! I love the composition, looking through from one side to the oyher, which gives a different and interesting perspectivd to the mundane (and also shields you from that aroma!). The little details of the graffiti daubed on the 'glass' adds to the scene. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
A scene most would pass by without a glance, let alone stop to take a photograph, but if we look around us there are plenty of interesting things, with a certain attractiveness even in the totally mundane. Composition and framing works well, as we are wide enough out to get the context, but close enough in to see details, such as the pipework and the weeds. Well done on your top ten placing.
A great 'street' shot of a collective of individual passengers on what looks to be the Lisbon underground. You have managed to perfectly capture the behaviour of people who are forced together in a relatively confined space, with no eye contact, no communication, with just shared tedium and a common purpose of getting from A to B. I love the black and white conversion, with some lovely tones and contrasts which bring the scene to life. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
The precision of the composition, with the verticals and horizontals all perfectly aligned, somehow add to the mundanity of the shot. I love the tones and colours, with the cool blues and greens contrasting nicely with the warmer browns. A wealth of details gives the viewer plenty to explore despite the mundane subject. Congratulations on your second place finish.

I would like to see your photos of a scene or subject that is considered mundane. This can be defined as something that is very ordinary, not at all interesting or unusual; the dull, the plain, the everyday. Please avoid adding creative post-processing effects to enhance the subject, but instead show the mundane and dull for what it is. The mundane subject can be anything you choose, from still-life, to landscape and street photography and can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.

A great subject for this theme of mundane. Whilst there will be some who enjoy washing the dishes, there is no escaping the task will rarely be anything other than mundane. This is a grest capture of the dirty dishes piled high in the sink. Lighting is great, with the blinds partially closed to control any over-exposure, but with some lovely highlights on the pots and pans. I also like the pop of bright green and red of the washing up liquid bottle, which lifts the shot. Congratulations on your third place finish.
Meet the judge
A mundane subject, but well-seen and well captured in an interesting composition, full of textural details and contrasting colours. Well composed with the pallet ends running on a diagonal across the frame. The relatively wide aperture has allowed some differential focus, which is pleasing on the eye and avoids being over-done by not having areas that are too blurred as to be a distraction. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
