***This is a ranked contest eligible only for the top 250 photographers on the site, but who have achieved 3 contest results in the past 12 weeks.*** The ‘negative space’ of a photo is the area that surrounds the ‘positive space’ (aka the main subject of the image). Composing a photo with the right balance of negative space is a clever way to create an image with a powerful and emotive simplicity, the key being to allow the main subject enough space to breathe and not cluttering the negative space with too much else. There are plenty of online examples for today’s technical challenge, including this one on Photography Mad.
