The only reason that this arresting image is not in my Top 10 is because I'm unsure if a quarter-of-a - bike fits the theme. The composition [colour matches and framing] and texture [especially that leather saddle] shows an imaginative eye and a technical skill. The lighting gives this bicycle real atmosphere and character, inviting one to touch the saddle and take off on ride! So clever to use a zoom to bring us the bike out of the clutter. Thank you for this treat!
I appreciate the sense of absurd, the abstraction, the contrast of round and square, and the minimalist colouring. Highly effective and visually compelling. There is a tension in the image - my eye wants to urgently pull the bicycle an inch or two to the left to place it in the centre of the white square. This tension effectively adds to the sense of abstarct and makes the photo so compelling.
What an arresting image! The subject is the totality of the image rather than the bicycle, but the contrast of the round wheels to the otherwise square and linear background is highly effective. The irony of the bicycle next to the sign also adds interest and 'story'. I enjoy the dynamic of the not-quite symmetry and the 'texture' of the background which I imagine needed the flatter lighting that you found. You kept it sharp - essential for the success of the composition. Thank you for submitting.
This is the purest of photographs - a literal 'drawing with light'. Just a bike in a street! But the lighting brings a sense of depth and mission. Cleverly framed in the apex of the curb and lamppost, the bicycle urgently suggests the questions of where is it's rider and what has she put in the basket. It's more of a story featuring a bicycle, than just a picture of a bicycle. Simple but effective colour compisition avoids distraction - the yellow road marking, highlighted padlock and pedal reflector add a triangle of arresting visual reference.
This evocative photograph is not just of a bicycle, but of the bicycle's culture and place in the world. The composition is astute - the bicycle leads the eye from corner-edge of frame into an atmospheric and slightly unknown round-the-bend of the darkened alley. The empty foreground helps to force the eye onto the bicycle and its indication of direction. Beautiful control of exposure and use of lighting bring focus to the bicycle and mystery to its destination. Sharp focus at the front of the bike and softer at the rear give it a sense of dynamism - even though it is parked. It seems primed - ready to ride! A rewarding image to see and discover. Thank you for submitting!
