Portraits with context

February 2026

A rather fun and humorous portrait of these two women. I get the they're at the bus stop heading out for the day.....or perhaps they're on their way home. Either way, it's their direct and blank looks that make this shot. The building in the background gives the location context. Super shot of real people!!

A beautiful caught moment of this man that I take to either be an artist of a gallery keeper. I love this look on his face and his placement within the frame. The room full of framed pictures tells the story.

Great image. The use of the these large circular forms and the placement of the subject within these forms creates a pleasing image. The warm colors and self light are good too. I wonder what this image would have looked like without the "burning in" effect that the vignetting is doing. I think I would like it just as much. The vignetting helps bring the viewers eye to the subject, but I think it would have happened anyway due to the color pop of her orange jacket and her huge smile.

Contextual portraiture is portraiture that sits the subject within a wider scene that brings more meaning to them. This might be their location, objects or other people in the scene, or their clothing, jewellery or possessions that add more to their story. These might tell us what the person does for a profession, the lifestyle they lead, their socio-economic situation or the particular news story they’ve found themselves a part of. The context of a portrait doesn’t need to tell the whole story, and it might even create more questions than it answers. But it does clearly distinguish the portrait from many studio portraits, where the focus is largely on the subject’s physical attributes and expression.
