What makes this image stand out for me is how you have captured the textures on these sprouting potatoes. The little wrinkles on the skin are especially true to life, and clearly portray the slightly softer feel that potatoes have as they start to wither and loose moisture. Focus on the little sprouts is nice and sharp, which gives plenty for the eye to explore. Well done on your top ten placing.
The contrasting white and red potatoes are a real draw to this image of a simple produce stall. The scene could be seen by some as being a little disordered or messy, but that somehow adds to the appeal for me with this subject, and it conveys a naturalness with nothing looking too staged or sterile. Great shot, well done on your top ten placing.

I love the lighting here, which nicely illuminates the subject. The light looks to be natural, maybe spilling in through a window to the side, and brings a natural feel to the image. The set-up and composition is simple but effective, and the image is all the stronger for its lack of flashy special processing effects or gimmicks, showing the subject for what it is - a simple basket of spuds, superbly captured. Congratulations on your second place finish.
This meal may not be exactly the healthiest, but you have captured the dish in a way that makes it look tempting and tasty. The chips look very eatable and importantly for this contest, are the main focal point. The wooden 'plate' gives a rusric feel to the shot and suits the subject. Colouring is bright but not over-done. Well done on your top ten placing.
This is a great close-in view of some thinly sliced potatoes, looking like they are fresh out the oven and making a tasty looking dish. Well captured, with a relatively shallow depth of field which draws the eye to some of the brown crisped edges. Colouring is natural, which is important when photographing food, where one of the key aims must be to convery a sense of tasty, tempting and delicious. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
A super still-life image of some humble potatoes. The overall low-key feel suits the subject, but lighting is sufficient to ensure the potatoes are showing plenty of detail and remain the star of the show. The set-up looks realistic with appropriate props, creating a visually pleasing composition. Congratulations on your winning image.
The slightly unconventional viewpoint drew my attention to this image. Captured with the camera relatively low to the ground adds a great dynamic and helps convey the action on the potato farm. The relatively wide angle lens used adds to that effect too. The colours sre bold and bright, and for my personal taste, the colouring of the sky is maybe a little over-done and tends to draw my eye a little from the main subject. Still a great shot however, well done on your top ten placing.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of potatoes. Images could show anything from potatoes being grown or sold, potato dishes being prepared, cooked or eaten, to creative still-life shots of potatoes and potato snacks. The potato, potato dish or potato product must be clearly visible and the main focus of your image. If you enter photos of snacks such as potato crisps/chips, please do not just show the packaging; the product must be visible too. Entries can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your images.
Meet the judge
This was a late entry into my top ten but once there it rose through the placings, and is an image I appreciate the more I look. The white plate, set against the white background, look to have been deliberately over-exposed, which allow the food to be the focus of the image. The inclusion of the fork adds interest and authenticity to the set-up. Captured with a wider aperture has created a shallow depth of field, with the little potato gnocchi in the mid-distance being in sharp focus, with those in front and behind falling softly out of focus. The glistening highlights on the food help make it look a tempting and tasty dish. Congratulations on your third place finish.
