It is time to sparkle! Show me how you can make precious or semi-precious gemstones shine photographically, either on their own or set in a jewellery piece. The stone needs to be the feature of your photograph. If you know what type of stone it is, please share your knowledge in the title or description. (The contest banner photo features a koroit matrix opal, i.e. a matrix of a tan ironstone with opal flashes. These pretty formations are found in the Yowah region of Queensland, Australia.) Please note that the following types of entries will not be considered for judging: off-brief photos and photos containing watermarks/names. Raters are also asked to mark “off-brief” entries accordingly. Fresh work, photos with a title, and natural-looking processing in post-production are favoured.
As people who have tried to photograph a small shiny, reflecting-in-many-directions, somewhat-transparent bit of carbon or similar substance would know, it is a challenging task. This photographer has succeeded and at the same time has managed to create an air of mystery that is easily associated with diamonds. The negative space adds to the drama. Thank you for entering this photograph and congratulations on your third place!
The photographer has included a few triangles in the composition to lead the eye through the frame. The brightest area on top is a bit distracting, but due to its shape it leads back to the gold chain, which leads to the pendant. The depth of field renders a crystal-clear focus on the stones and their mirrored image, and they are photographed at their most attractive angle for this effect to be visible. Thank you for entering this photograph and congratulations on your Top 10 placement!
