Renewable Energy

May 2021

I enjoyed this fantastic, moody and painterly landscape image, in which the wind turbines are almost incidental. I love the contrast between the grasses, the steely sea, and the beautiful clouds. A great place for a blustery stroll, no doubt. Great work.

A clear winner for its originality in subject matter and composition. I love the sheer scale and drama of it; the way the light falls on the curve of the walls; the figure standing in the centre; and the symmetry of the gantries and floor being broken by the pipe on the right. I would love to stand in his place and feel the steam in the air. I almost can. A wonderful image.

Such an unusual view of a wind turbine, and at such a brief moment in its life - a full height tower, but no blades yet (they're lying on the ground at the top of the image, waiting to be lifted and attached). I love the feeling of height, and of hard work below. Of skilled construction and engineering in progress.

Having looked at all of the (1,100) images submitted, it seems it is hard to get a good image of solar panels, but this shot manages it via the curves of the landscape and the variance in light across the panels. Great work.

A spectacular landscape shot, that just happens to contain a fascinating renewable energy technology. I love the way the power of the generating station 'burns' so fiercely in the bottom left and cuts diagonally across the image. A great composition with a distinct 'Lord of the Rings' feel.

Wonderful architecture and the sheer power and movement of the water caught my eye here. I love the colours in the water, the light in the clouds, and the symmetry of the arches. The photographer notes that "the sound and force... was a thrill to watch" and it really comes through. I'd love to have witnessed it myself.

A close second place, for originality of subject matter. I love the the glints of the solar power on the kettles, and the simplicity of the technology, which is somehow reflected in the composition. I even love the dirty pair of trousers hanging over the edge of the panel and the rubbish in the background! Who wouldn't want to stop and try a cuppa from this set up?

There were a great many wonderful images of offshore wind farms against dramatic skies. I knew I had to choose one for the top ten. It is hard to explain why this image beat the others, except to say it seemed to combine the best of the rest with the beautiful clouds, colours and light on the water. An extension to Rampion OWF is in development now!

The renewable energy revolution is gathering pace, driven largely by advances in solar and wind power. Renewable energy harnesses power from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished which, alongside solar and wind, includes hydroelectric, biomass, geothermal, wave and tidal energy, and other emerging technologies. This contest forms part of a series that we’ll be running during 2021 that will focus on both the problems that our environment is currently facing, and the solutions that are emerging to help us tackle them.

Several great images were submitted of Crosby Beach, the wind farm and the Antony Gormley sculptures ('Another Place'). I love the stillness of the figures and knew I had to have one image for the top 10! It was hard to pick a favourite. The colour and movement in the sky meant this image squeezed through as winner. I enjoyed the photographer's write-up too. I hope to visit this place sometime soon.

I enjoyed the simplicity of composition and colour of this shot, and the awkwardness of the right-hand turbines, jarring against the evenly spaced machines to the left. A lovely, peaceful view of a wind farm on a coastline I know well.

My favourite of many windmill images because it avoided the 'scenic cliches' of so many others and focused on the mechanics of it; the parts that made it work. I also love the beautiful shape of the dome, and the curiously-placed open window that suggests someone is inside who could set it all in motion again, when the wind is right.

A pretty basic shot that initially did little to change my view that it's hard to take a good image of solar panels. And yet, somehow, I grew to love it. The sense that the light falling on the panel is just waking it up, and something magical is happening was hard to shake off. Great work.

A favourite among the windmill shots. I love the way these three ageing brothers appear to be lumbering across the shot, like cartoon characters. The middle one appears to be leaning forward in his efforts to catch up with the first.
