Repetition and Order in Nature

March 2022

This photo has everything I want to see in an image fitting the category of repetition and order in nature. It's well lit, the depth of field is even, focus is sharp, and the lighting celebrates the features that make the image so compelling. Love this swirl of repeating shapes, color and line, bravo!

Meet the expert judge

There were many peacock images submitted for this competition, but for me, the uniqueness of this close up photo really stood out. I love the repetition of line and color for a more abstract take on the subject. Excellent job getting in close and filling the frame.

One of the things I love most about this image is the mystery of just what the subject is. The repeating lines and shapes spreading out across the white background are simple, stark and so beautiful, and nothing I have seen before. Knowing now that these are sand dunes shot from the air fills me with wonder and an even deeper appreciation of this photo.

The tonal range in this fern photo is just lovely. The repeating lines, shapes and textures fill the frame well, and I especially love the area where the ferns overlap. I think the vignette helps to simplify the image and draw even more attention to that area.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** In exploring the natural world, one finds order and repetition in many places, and on vastly different scales. From the elaborate structures of snowflakes, or delicately patterned insects, to the geological order of features like the Giant’s Causeway, or waves of huge crescent dunes marching across the desert.
