Great contest!

I find flowing curves captivating. The folds in this sail may have fallen casually but they have a wonderful symmetry about them, which I’m guessing is why you took the trouble to capture them. The pale blue sky blends well with the colours of the sail without distracting and the aspect ratio selected has produced a nicely balanced shot. Thank you for entering it into my “Sails” contest.

The vertical view through these sails has captured the glorious curve that’s formed as the wind blows into them. The presence of a crow’s nest through the gap is a bonus and evokes thoughts of what night be seen from such height. It fills me with a desire to go out and explore the ocean. Thank you for your entry into my “Sails” contest.

I like this vision of a sail. Not many of us would have the opportunity to study one from this angle, so it’s nice to enjoy it this way. The seams in the canvas help you to understand the curvature whilst wondering about the placement of the various lines, tackle and telltales. Thank you for submitting this inspired point of view into my “Sails” contest.

This image of sails is another interesting one. Not just because it’s a close-up but also because of the detail captured in this traditional vessel. I love the grain in the wooden boom, something that modern materials cannot compete with. And the colours complement those of the sails so well. I also like the nautical title. Thanks for this majestic entry into my “Sails” contest.

This image captures the brief for my “Sails” contest perfectly – thank you for reading it. There is little to distract from the sail material and it captures the graceful curves that a full sail can form. The angle is adventurous, giving a view that is not always appreciated by the common or garden land-lubber. Not only that, the image is sympathetically framed to provide leading lines from corner to corner. The addition of the sun from behind is plain brilliant (I’m sorry if you don’t appreciate my puns), you could say that this one blew me away!

You cannot pass this image by without stopping to look at it. The sails have been carefully furled and are proudly illuminated by a rainbow of lights. The intention of this dramatic evening exhibition was to draw attention and it worked. Brilliantly. Thank you for entering it into my “Sails” contest.

This is stunning abstract that has major properties to set it aside from those taken of vessels in the distance. The view along the bowsprit and the brightly coloured sail contrast nicely against the blue and white sky overhead. The point of view captures some delightfully flowing curves along the foot of the sail. This is a magnificent study of a sail capturing the wind. I am so pleased that you entered it into my “Sails” contest!

The symmetry of the furled sails and arrangement of the ship’s company above them is credit to their discipline and has provided a magnificent spectacle. It’s a shame that the resolution on my screen cannot tell me if the members of this crew are smiling or struck with fear (there seems to be a good breeze blowing through them)! The detail is good enough to tell me that there are women present as well as men, however. Thank you for submitting your capture of this momentous occasion into my “Sails” contest. It was refreshingly different.

A great shot, with a moody sky. The boats and their sails are picked-out by the sunlight shining across them, which picks them out from the dull background. Interest is added by the way that the sails have been shaded, with a dramatic silvering. The water is level and the boats have space to move into. A great interpretation for my “Sails” contest. Thank you!

It’s always a help when you have such a lovely sky for a backdrop, but this contest was not about skies… With a furled (or closed) sail right across the centre, the subject of this image is clear. The view from the deck to the top of the mast encourages the eye to explore the wonderful detail of rigging, sheets and tackle (and whatever other nautical descriptions of rope you might wish to pursue), for which it is well-rewarded. Thank you for submitting this marvellous perspective into my “sails” contest.

Indeed this is a red sail, and an eye-catching one at that! I like the way that the image is taken, looking in the direction of travel. It also gives us the chance to compare the difference between what I believe is this “Lateen” variety and the more familiar “Bermuda” rig. Many thanks for this entry into my “Sails” contest.

The beautiful shades of blue drew me to this image. I also liked the ambiguity of the title (foresail) even though it was probably not intended. Having aroused my interest, I was fascinated by the creasing of the mainsails. They are all in the same class and circumstances but I’d have expected a ‘perfectly trimmed’ sail to be fully stretched, without creases. Not so, but they are all very similar in form so I guess this is representative of the conditions they were in. Maybe a yachtsman can advise? I give you credit for capturing such detail. If anything, I’d like to have seen a little more space to the left, for this team to be moving into your image rather than out of it.

This image is full of sail. The different coloured panels of the spinnakers accentuate the delightful shape of these canvases when full of wind. I like the fact that they are sailing towards the viewer and into the picture but feel that a less square format might have permitted more of the sail on the left (and, if possible, the tip of that boat’s mast to become visible. Thank you for entering this into my “Sails” contest.

I love the different shades of beige/brown of these billowing sails. I find them more intriguing because it’s difficult (for me) to tell exactly what is going on here and what kind of sails they are. However, it is the wonderous set of sails that attracted me and that is what this contest was all about. Thank you for entering my “Sails” contest. This has aroused my interest in these historic sailing boats.

I am looking for your photos of sails, the material that is used to harness wind power to propel a boat or sailboard. The sails may be anywhere between furled-up or full of wind but please focus on the sails rather than boats. There is an opportunity to capture colourful events such as a regatta, or the details of the graceful curves that sails may form. I look forward to judging your photos.

The title of this image alerts you to the fact that this sailboat is heading directly towards the camera. What makes this stand out, however, is the way the light has caught the sail to emphasise its shape. Not only does this image contain drama, but also just about every shade of blue! Thank you for your entry into my “Sails” contest!

Sailing in a pleasure craft like this is so graceful. I picked this one out because its painterly appearance and subdued colour tones seem to reinforce the calmness and tranquillity of such an activity. It is so inviting that I’d just love to be able to take one out onto the broads myself. A wonderful scene to submit into my “Sails” contest! Thank you.

I love the sweeping curves of this (genoa?) sail. Its bright colours help to capture attention and the image is full of sail. It’s nice to see a level horizon (so easily overlooked) but I feel that the added sun rays are too artificial to make it into my Top Ten. It is a delightful image, none-the-less and I love the colour tones. Thank you for entering it into my “Sails” contest.
