Shooting Up-Close

July 2023

There were so many flower images in this competition, but this one really stood out for me. First of all, the shadows and highlights are so beautiful, but the texture that comes through is incredible - it really makes the image come to life.

Very clever composition to create a beautiful image. The lighting is also lovely and the specular highlights really add to the photograph. It's like you captured an entire other world inside that dew drop! Very pretty and well executed photo.

Very well done - I know how tricky it can be to capture a shot like this and make it look this good! I especially appreciate the angle you've chosen and the beautiful back lighting to add some drama - great work!

I couldn't stop looking at this photograph! All the contrasting textures that you've managed to capture, and everything is perfectly in focus - it's stunning! Really nice work - I feel like I just want to reach out and touch it!

Beautifully clear and crisp photo with wonderful detail - I appreciate how the entire subject is perfectly in focus - that's not easy to do when shooting macro and in this case it has been very well executed - nice work!

What I love about this photograph is how you have managed to take such a simple subject and make it look extremely dramatic. The composition work really well in creating a whole mood for this box of eggs! Nice work.

Shooting things up-close (you can call it macro photography if you want, although this also comes with quite a specific definition regarding the size of the subject) opens up whole worlds that you and those looking at your images might not have considered before. If you’re itching to get closer to your subject, and your current lens just isn’t doing it for you, then spending money on a macro lens, or spending quite a lot less on an extension tube or a macro filter, will give you the satisfaction of getting close enough to bring out those details you just don’t normally see. Any subject is allowed in this contest, and we’re not sticking to that definition of ‘macro’, in case you were wondering.

I absolutely adore the dreamy composition of this photograph! The contrasting textures are also extremely pretty and I love how you have handled the depth of field to add to the story - it looks like a painting - beautiful!

I love the creativity of this shot. On top of a clever and thoughtful composition, it is extremely well executed. My only critique would be that I'd like to see a bit more of the coloured strings in focus - but it really is a stunning photograph.

What I appreciate most about this photograph is how you have manged to clearly draw the eye to one particular area, despite the fact the entire frame is made up of the same thing over and over - it's a real display of skill with the aperture. Nice work!

I saw a few of this style of image in the competition but I felt this one was particularly well executed. The specular highlight on the tip of the pencil is really stunning and the pretty shadows you've managed to achieve on the wooden part of the pencil make it very appealing. Nice work!

This is a beautiful photograph that clearly shows a high level of photographic skill. The focus on the eyes really draws the viewer right in. - it's the kind of photo I want to explore every inch of! Beautiful work!

This photograph is so perfect it almost looks like a painting! I love how you have captured the softness in the petals ye thave still managed to have the main subject stand out and look sharp. The lighting is also very pretty..

This photograph immediately draws the viewer in - I feel like the eagle is demanding something of me through the screen! I really appreciate the sharpness of this image and the contrasting textures between the beak and the feathers. Good work!

This whole image is a celebration of texture! I really appreciate how you have managed to effectively showcase every single texture perfectly. The image itself is also just so beautifully crisp and clear - it looks as though it's really sitting in front of me.

Gorgeous photograph - you've managed to make a traditionally unattractive-looking dish look extremely pretty and appetizing. I especially like the edit on this - it's the perfect balance of softness and clarity - and the colour story is just lovely.
