I loved this shot and if I had one more space in the top 10 it would have made it for capturing the moment and speed. A lot of tough competition this time around and things like sensor dust spots and the focus not being quite spot on have let this down a little, sorry, I loved it when it was small on my screen but just didn't quite make it when I saw it fullsize., Well done though for capturing the moment.

Ha ha, I know that feeling - 3,456 goes of panning!! You're almost there! I've spent years practicing my panning and I've learned that different subjects need different techniques and shutter speeds. Rowing is one of the toughest to get right. I would suggest 1/6th is to slow with so many moving parts until you've got your motion sorted. For this sport, you need to feel the rhyme of the rowers or the boat to get in sync with the motion. I move my knee's side to side and can get down to 1/15th for tack sharp images. You could try that method, or try moving another part of your body to get the flow. Best of luck.

Love it! Speed!! Everything about this photograph say's speed. I think this shot captures the brief perfectly, well done, you've got the top shot of the competition. You've captured the perfect composition, focus, depth of field and all set on the sandy background with no other distractions in the frame, it's great. I love that you haven't done much processing. it's just a great photographic image all round. Congratulations on the win in a tough competition, it was hard selecting my top 10 but you image stood out!

Great composition, balance, motion and colour, lots of things to like in this shot. The CCTV on the pole lifts this above the other tube train photos and your use of colour on the different parts in post-production helps it really stand out in this competition. The only reason this isn't top, and not a critique of this actual shot but I saw a lot of tube train images and the top shot was a little more original in it's concept. Really lovely shot, I enjoy looking at this one, well done and thank you for entering it..

Love the concept of this shot! Your composition is great, your focus just right and great use of depth of field to isolate your subject. Personally, I think it would have been nicer in colour because of the solid background, it would have framed the snail nicely and the contrast of this background colour with the foreground snail would look awesome, but for all I know it could have been a steel coloured door so colour wouldn't have worked! The black and white does show off the texture of the snail's body really nicely and it definitley say's speed. Well done for making the top 10, a tough competition.

Great composition and colour, caught my eye. I'm presuming this is a composite as you've not written any details on how you made it. I can see it's shot at 1/1000th of a second so the motion blur must have been added in post - the blur is both in front and behind the objects in the shot. Still, it made my top 10 as it caught my eye with the colour and composition and made me look longer. Well done.

Meet the expert judge

I saw a lot of aircraft photos entered in this competition and rightly so, a great subject for a brief on speed, but yours stands out above the others for several reasons. Firstly, it's tack sharp, well done, along with some nice motion blur of the background - and at 1/800th of a second this plane was going really fast to get motion blur like this. I also love your processing and balance of tones which brings out the details in the shadows. If I had one thing I'd tweak it's the highlight recovery of the sky on the right, a tad to dark. Saying that I still love this shot, well done.

Congratulations on a superb image composition, I like the symmetry of the elements. You did well to beat a lot of great images in this competition. I found it hard to select the final 10 but yours was striking, it says speed to me which answers the brief! I like the mix of static elements and motion blur, the colours pop and the strippy canes hold it all together. Well done to you, a tough competition!

What a great image, it draws you in to look closer at the details and elements you've used to make the final composition. I'm not usually a fan of adding things not in the original image but in this case, it really works. You have a great eye for the balance of tones and leading the viewer's eye into the image. It has a sinister feel to it, almost as if through the eye of someone dazed by the fairground experience. Really nice, well done.

What a great image, nice concept, and interpretation of the brief. To top it off your colouring and processing of it is spot on especially with an iso of 3200 - that's Sony for you! I'm guessing the top one with the red stripe won? I see you shot it at 1/40th of a second so I presume they were not even moving at this stage of the race. And Well done on a top 10 place.

What a great landscape shot, perfect composition with the foreground rock set against the island, tonnes of action in the motion blur and lovely colouring. You didn't write about how you captured this shot and but with the sun in the background and light hitting the rocks from the right I'm guessing you added the sky/sun in post-production? Something not quite right, I can't put my finger on it. Saying that I do love it, it answers the brief, it draws you in to look closer. Well done.
