A really strong, well composed image using figures arranged in a complex and interesting way across the frame that also shows what you need for the very best of street photography, which is layers of people. - The man in the foreground looking defiantly into the frame,; the streak of shadow across his eyes keeping him anonymous only makes him more interesting. The lady - also in the foreground forming an interesting shape as she bends down to deal with her bike. In the middle ground in between the two foreground figures, we have the next layer of people; each doing their own thing, ignorant of the other. then the figure in the background walking away.... Looking at the photo as a whole, it definately has all the qualities of a classic street photograph. Well done.
A fantastically arresting image. A lot of the best street photography relies on the graphic qualities of a dynamic composition and strong light and shadows. Other great street photographs have that decisive moment - the image that relies on narrative. What's going on here?. We are all intrigued by this image. Something out of the ordinary has just been captured . Pockets of Incongruous figures across the frame. Each set of figures showing us different happenings. The man collapsing in a wonderfully dramatic pose whilst the man in the suit stands over him, interested and disinterested at the same time. Seemingly concerned but not enough to bend down and help him. All the while, a saintly figure at the makeshift alter peers over his shoulder at what is going on; light eminating from the head of the man as he calmly ponders. Behind him, a woman is too consumed in what looks like prayer to know what's just happened. The group of onlookers/participants look like they are having their own existential crisis as two of the group look frought with angst whilst the other two stand there, staring, mesmerised. What a great scene! so interesting because of its enigmatic quality. I love this image. An image done in the great tradition of classic street photography depicting life happening on the street. A fantastic image and a real winner!
For me, this is what classic street photography is all about - catching your attention with a strong dynamic image, full of tension; where what is happening at the edge (or beyond) of the frame is as important as what's happening within it. The layers of subjects lending more sophistication to the image. The Man and girl walking away from the frame to the left with mother and infant looking away, the boys with their exaggerated movements held together by the bright pink inflatable hanging over their heads pulling away from the pram to the left as if trying to break free to float away from the frame. The passive static figure at the cashpoint completing the compositional element. A strong dynamic photograph in the best traditions of street photography. well done!
This image is so powerful!. Stripped to the bare minimum elements. The monotone lighting giving the image it's mood; just the anonymous shadows of figures all over the frame, all without faces cloaked in dark head scarves looking away. The light source coming principally from one place. But of course the viewer's eye goes straight to the little boy, picked out by his bright-light face as he's carry along in this sea of anonymous figures; staring into the distance and lost in deep thought that is melancholic, giving this image a poignant feel. Sometimes a photograph can say so much, whilst showing so little. A powerful image that seems very symbolic.
Some of the best street photography captures scenes similar to this one - surreal and ambiguous. Why is there a pony facing a boy in an environment that on the face of it seems so out of context. why have they come to be in the middle of this bleak, landscape with scorched walls?. Perfectly framed by a goal, these two subjects relating to one another in an interesting way. The boy's exaggerated movements make the scene more interesting - both boy and pony equally and totally captivated by one another. . I love that nothing else around them is there to take your attention away from them, framed (almost) perfectly in the middle of the image by the white lines of the goal. A strong stark composition, with an interesting narrative to it make this a special image. Brilliant!
This photographer has introduced a factor of what makes street photography so popular, which is seeking humour in the everyday. This is often done by juxtaposing subjects with street furniture in order to introduce surreal visual combinations, like this one, which involves merging two halves of two different things. Like the photographer says, he has waited until a passer-by has walked behind an outdoor photographic installation. It's made all the funnier because the top half has the person photographed holdong his hands in front of his face, with the legs of the passer-by looking like this figure is walking blind. The lines in the frame also give it a strong composition. Well done.
This reminds me of a William Eggleston photograph. One that gives life and meaning to what is outwardly a mundane street scene. It makes you study the image more, when you see well composed objects displayed photographically in this way, they become more interesting and seem to inform us more about street life; about what it's like to live in a town like this. I like the way the telephone box which looks like it hardly gets used, is leaning to one side next to the telegraph pole. The road sweeping around out of the edge of the frame into nowhere., and the higgledy-pigg;ledy nature of the buildings in the background make this section of small-town America appealing. The soft, muted light of a late afternoon along with the snow adds to the photo's qualities. A lovely well thought photographic work, that shows you don't neccessarily have to have a frame filled with people to show life.

This photo is one of those that will always stand out from the crowd, simply because of it's strong composition and it's great lighting. The photographer has made the absolute most of this scene in order to capture that surreal feeling both the architecture and the artificial lighting is giving to this image. I love the electric blue of this image, and the fact that the photographer has chosen a businessman with a plain suit, only enhances the effect the blue colour has on everything in this image. His suit looks like it's made of metal. The fact that he is walking away from the camera retaining his anonymity adds to the enigmatic feel The photographer has also made sure to get maximum graphic impact by having the lone figure dead centre with all the lines converging onto him. This photo looks like the still from a Stanley Kubrick science fiction film. A great photo!.
A classic night time urban street scene, wonderfully enhanced by steam both along the ground and in the air that helps highlight the figures in the foreground, captured against a montage of colourful blues and reds and purples of the street and car lights. A slower shutter speed makes the picture all the more evocative with the slight blurry movement of the figures and the steam on a cold night in NYC . A great cinematic night time depiction of the big City.
This is a very cinematic scene depicting urban life in an interesting way, in that it is done with a long range lens to create a montage-like depiction of life after dark, with layers of neon and colour flattened out within the frame, seemingly one on top of the other. Splashes of purple and red and pink and yellow make this such a nice image to look at. And what rounds this photograph off so nicely is the face of the woman (bottom right) lit so well in the back of the cab behind the glass, staring into to bright neon-lit wonder of the big city. An image that perfectly captures the wonders of the night-time metropolis. Well done.
A lovely cinematic moment in time, that evokes so much of what is great about photography, taking you to "another place' in more ways than one.. the light and the colours reflected and absorbed on the palate that in this case is a window of a cafe at sunset or sunrise, or are the silhouettes created by car headlights?. either way, it's a very photogenic scene that makes you want to know what the two subjects are talking about; lit up by the light source that draws you in to what's happening - this image also seems to have a narrative to it; the figure to the left almost looking like he is trying to listen in on what the other two figures are saying. I love the painterly shades of green and blue and yellow that are washing all over the image; with the neon red adding to the colours. It looks like the scene from a road movie. A truly great image. well done!
This is an example of the photographer thinking more intelligently about framing and composition when presented with a scene that on the face of it has not got much happening. They have made use of the lovely geometry that has been offered up from the surrounding architecture. The light also plays a part, going from light to shade to dark and light again. The boy is wonderfully positioned in the frame, leaning in from the right hand bottom corner, creating that tension you need. Without him there, the photo would be sterile somehow. The sharp diagonal line above him contrasting nicely with the curved lines above.. I expect the photographer had also waited for a figure to emerge towards the middle, in the pool of light, or along the top, but no matter, this is still a very cleverly composed picture that any photographer would be proud of capturing.. Well done.

Good street photography combines an eagle-eyed observance of your environment with the technical skill and dexterity required to compose and quickly fire off the right shots when a situation presents itself. Do you stake out a particular scene from afar in the manner of Cartier-Bresson, or get in people’s faces like Joel Meyerowitz? All of life is there on the street, and the camera offers the perfect medium to capture it.
This is such an interesting image. The photographer has been very creative and has tried to do something that has turned a photograph into what looks like an expressionist painting!. The figure also reminds me of a Giacometti sculpture. The photographer has chosen a red wall as his pallet and looks like they have put the camera on a tripod at a slow shutter speed and waited for people to walk across the frame, capturing their blurred movement as they walk past. I also like the little bit of graffiti on the wall top left. A ver creative and different take on street photography. Well done!
A lovely photograph that captures the perfect combination of the "smoke and mirrors' visual effect a great photograph can give you, - provided by the steam coming out of the shiny waterlogged pavements that reflect the silhouettes coming in and out of the clouds of smoke/steam. I love the way they come in and out ; some in full flight and others half hidden. A wonderful image to feast your eyes on!
The underground/metro system is always a great place to wander and capture urban life at it's most quintessential. Here the photographer has done really well and stood back with a longer lens, waiting for crowded trains at rush hour to come and go; providing the photographer with good opportunities to take commuters crammed up to one another through the windows of the train. I like the thousand yard stare of the woman contrasting with the man looking away lost in something. Also the hint of other goings on to the left of the frame. A great photo.
This image is made poignant and iconic because of it's brilliant composition. An enigmatic photo that seems to be full of symbolism. The seagull is perfectly framed within the silhouette of the back of a man looking away into an urban environment. The urban scape running all the way across the frame along the middle of the frame; the smog from the chimney seems to complete the picture. The photograph seems to suit being shot in black and white as well. A wonderful moment captured!.
