This is such an interesting image, so cleverly lit using both flash and ambient lighting. all done on a slow shutter speed, hence everything pin sharp throughout the frame and the ghost like figure to the right lit by the flash as he is walking; whilst keeping the figure to the left bathed in the warmer orange lights from the street lamps. The glamorous model on the billboard lit another way , in the centre of the frame only adds to the sophisticated lighting the photographer has captured/used in this image. Often image like this one really stays with you because they seem to have a strong visual narrative. A wonderfully enigmatic image for it's lighting as well as framing. The fact that you cannot see or know what's really happening - the subject is facing away from the camera -, but because of it's strong aesthetic, you want to know. Is she about to confront what's in the house?. has something just happened..or about to happen?. i love the saturated colors, and the rim lighting on the girl, with a bright moon over her head. It's like a still from a David Lynch film. A wonderful image.
This is a fantastic image that takes in the night time landscape in all it's splendour of a city and it's surroundings. You can see everything here. At the bottom of the frame the lights of the cars captured on a slow shutter speed winding their way into the sparkling lights of the city in the middle of the frame nestled under a dramatic sky as your eye goes to the top of the picture; showing the last signs of the sinking red sun(?). A great image!.
This photograph captures a classic street scene so well thought out, both technically and visually. Taken on a long lens, the photographer has flattened the perspective to give a dynamic city scene bursting with life. a montage of neon and people all jostling for space. But what really makes this a great shot is how he/she has used a tripod to take the photo on a slow shutter speed so as to render the human traffic beneath the neon lights a big blur of movement. And within the movemnet you see glimpses of peoples faces making it not too abstract, but at the same time impressionistic. such a great image!. Well done.
Wow, this is a belter. The photographer has obviously taken the photograph on a very slow shutter speed and in doing so has made a wonderfully striking crisp, beautifully lit image that brings to life the roman amphitheatre in all it's glory; under a sky full of stars. And to cap it all, has brought out the bright red tail lights of cars sweeping around the bend to the left of the frame. All in all, so much to look at in a wonderful image thast jumps out at you.
This is a great and very sophisticated capture!. An image where so much is going on, and telling us what life is like at night. The photographer has shown life on the streets as well as life inside a tram/bus/train as people travel home from work. All cleverly done within one frame, using reflections; that happen to be perfectly placed in the picture, above the evocatively lit street scene gliding by. Great work and a deserved winner!.
this is a perfectly composed image capturing the glamour and beauty of the city at night in a striking way. Clean, crisp, shiny and colourful, with all the elements perfectly arranged throughout the frame. the couple to the bottom left are nicely lit, surrounded by shiny cars reflecting fireworks on their bonnets and windows from the night sky above. a very strong image. Well done.
This is a really well thought out and well constructed image. Perfectly framed, along with the lighting. Also The right lens (a long focal length) was used; with a fairly narrow depth of field to throw out the car and street lighting, leaving you to focus on just the figure hailing a car in the rain; perfectly placed within the frame of the rear view mirror. wonderfully cinematic as well as giving us lots of visual information. I also love the spots of rain on the mirror that enhances the mood of late night city life. A brilliant image!

This another very effective way of capturing the city at night. rendering it impressionistic, using lighting , together with moisture on windows that look through to human activity behind them. Here we only see blurred faces awash with colour behind the glass, unaware of anything around them; whilst the neon sign says "Open". A very artistic, painterly way of depicting life at night.

Our streets at night can range from a heaving city intersection, aglow with neon and partygoers falling over each other, to a near-deserted lamplit street with a solitary figure heading home from a late night at the office. It can take courage enough to capture life on the street, but especially so after dark, when a photographer's presence may unsettle subjects more. The results, though, have an atmosphere all of their own, and document the way we live our lives after the sun goes down.
Being a bit of a purist when it comes to street photography tis might not have been a candid shot - maybe a set up portrait. None-the less. is wonderfully evocative, with great lighting. Very beguiling. It catches the mood when you go home in the eaely hours after a big night out and fall asleep in the back of a cab on the way home; though this looks it was a very glamorous hight out!. The moody, red (neon?) lighting as well as the framing is what makes this picture special. Well done!
This photograph combines the best of photojournalism and art photography. informing us of whats happening, but also making sure to make it artistically visual as well. the photographer has placed him/herself in a great vantage point to show the context and the bigger scene - a city flooded in the monsoon rains at night, with the street lamps falling on crowds of people under umbrellas in the background and giving a starring role to a couple in the centre foreground picked out by the light, wading through the water. A really strong image!. well done.
A strong, well composed shot that makes the upmost of a striking array of neon lighting; that washes over people, pavements and cars in such a striking way. It's also a decisive moment in that the photographer has captured the moment a person bathed in light opens the door onto the street just as another figure enters stage left Meanwhile the neon lighting tells you all you need to know about the place. I would love to see the photographer's project on Soho at might. A great photograph.
