Great contest!

There were many scenes of storms by the coast and waves hitting the sea defenses but this image I deemed worthy of a top ten finish. Thanks for sharing... What made this stand out for me was the fact you've captured a terrific moment in the storm; the waves have receded away from the wall but look like they're gathering more energy, ready to strike again. I also like the composition, not having the lighthouse central but allowing both the waves and wall to share the attention. Finally, the image is very sharp and it's clear to see the power mother nature is bringing to the table.

I really like the composition of this and the slow-motion capture of the water. The brooding skies add to the sense of nature's threat. I feel perhaps I might have shortened the shutter speed to keep more of the water's energy, but, I do love your shot. Thanks!

I think this is a great shot! The clarity from foreground to the pillars is super and you have captured the sunlight so well. It must have been a great moment to actually be there... The image shows nature's power in a historical sense, over time which I admire. Thank you for sharing.

There's a lot I like about this image. It does highlight nature's power through the waves and I like the slant on the theme, with human's embracing that power and trying to conquer it! You've captured the surfer so well and I like the almost blue tones in this monochrome image. Thanks for sharing!

I like the composition of your image with interesting patterns leading to the peak on the left. The skies do indeed look menacing and I think the monochrome works well with the contrasting light; the light around the edge of the clouds and light revealing the rain. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great image. The power to generate such waves is huge and you've definitely captured mother nature letting rip! Sometimes it's hard to get a sense of scale but the lighthouse and brave or crazy people in the foreground certainly provide that! Thanks for sharing.

I think this is a beautiful image... it's one i can look at again and again. It works fantastically in monochrome and you've captured the light superbly. The skies are definitely brooding. This missed out on a place in my top 10 as I was primarily interested in the power of nature being caught in the act but again, I do this this is terrific. Thanks for sharing 😊

First of all, thanks for sharing this powerful image. Although we don't see the power of nature in action, this captures the aftermath in striking fashion and I couldn't ignore it. As a documentary-style photo it works well and the colour of the ruined property against the drab surrounding helps the eye focus on it. It shows mother nature can be devastating...

First of all, well done. I really like this image . The wide angle and long exposure help to create a super image. The clouds are foreboding and together with the lightning shows mother nature's power. The foreground may seen a little underexposed for some but I like the dark so the eyes are drawn to the lightning. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your image. It really hits the brief and shows so much power in the waves... there is undoubtedly tonnes of energy there. For me, the only thing I would have liked to have seen with it, to emphasise that power further, would be something that helped reveal the true sense of scale. However, it's a great shot - thanks again.

First off, thanks for sharing this. I was drawn to this image by the composition with a road leading the eye into the distance and the storm clouds to the side ominously approaching. I also think the monochrome works well here, particularly in the way it showcases the angry clouds.

Although this image does not show the power of nature in the act, I was nevertheless drawn to the striking effect it has upon the land. I also like how the connection is made between extreme weather and how it affects humans. The composition was impressive too with the drought dominating the space and the child standing out with colourful clothes against the otherwise plain ground. Thanks for sharing.

This was close to a top ten finish as I really liked the combination of the clear result of mother nature's power and the dramatic, awful effect it had on the community; the image works for me as a good documentary image. Thank you for sharing this.

First of all, thanks for sharing your image. It clearly shows a moody, dangerous skyline and I was drawn to this by the contrasting colours: the dark skies clashing with the golden fields really make this an impressive picture. The horizon completing the bottom third of the image also helps the composition. Once again, well done...

Well done on a top ten finish. I really liked your image and the way you have captured the power of nature. It looks truly menacing and the composition with the property at the heart, about to be engulfed, as well as the sodden ground to the left indicating earlier bad weather is great. The colours are vivid and contrasting from the blues and greys of the skies with the lush, green fields. Thanks 😊

First of all, congratulations! There were multiple entries which showed stormy waves crashing into storm defenses and Newhaven featured heavily too. However, I was repeatedly drawn to your image because not only does it clearly capture the power of the storm as it generates huge waves, but your image is so sharp with a great depth of field! It's a great composition. Thanks for sharing 😊

Thanks for sharing and well done on a top ten placing. I had to select this as I was captivated by the scale of the waves as well as the way the ones in the background look to explode over the seawall. What really adds to the image is central positioning of the waves and the light... the 'front of the waves' being illuminated really helps them stand out. Thanks again 😊

Mother Nature can be scary at times such is her power. This contest is for your photos that have been able to capture some of that power, whether an erupting volcano, waves crashing, a storm or hurricane raging. Your image should focus on the power of nature itself in all its anger, rather than the aftermath. A little photo editing is to be expected but please try to use images that have not been over-processed with objects added. I look forward to your entries.

First off, thanks for sharing this image and well done on a top ten finish. This really is a powerful image that hits the brief. The menace of mother nature in one of her many guises is evident and the plane looks so small and almost significant beside the power of the storm. I think the image looks superb in monochrome and the contrast between light and dark strengthens the threat. It's a great documentary image... thanks again. 😊
