The Sea

July 2024

The humble pier has been elevated into something beautiful and timeless. Superb technique to blur the grey sea and sky has allowed the subtle colors of the buildings on the pier to really stand out. The two thirds framing works really well and draws our eye along the frame and from the Ferris wheel along the buildings to the edge of the sea. This would make a stunning postcard and a wonderful series of images of piers. Do look at Simon Robert's book Pierdom if you do not already know it. This is a lovely example both of a great photograph but of a fading landscape within Britain, The pier. Well done.

The sheer power of nature shines through this dramatic and beautifully caught photograph. The darkened skies work perfectly against the lighthouse being battered by these giant waves. Well done to the photographer for positioning themselves within the scene. As a viewer I feel that I am in the frame. It works really well. The fast shutter speed to really capture the sharp detail of the almost cinematic waves works brilliantly as does the monochromatic color palette. A stunning formal picture where all the elements are perfectly placed to make a stunning photograph. A truly epic scene of nature. Really well done.

This really stood out and I wanted to reward the bravery of the photographer for photographing something so different to most entries within the competition. This superb image full of abstract graphic shapes works really well and the light on the water above the close cropped body and bikini adds depth and texture to the picture. I can imagine this as part of a larger series of work. Keep going. Great capture and well done for doing something that little bit different.

A brutal, bleak landscape perfectly captured by the photographer. The elevated camera position allows us the viewers to witness the entire scene and the scale of the journey of the person in the frame. The use of black and white fits in perfectly with the subject matter and the dark brooding white of the beach against the incoming darkened waves just adds that extra drama to the image. This is a superb example of a documentary landscape. Perfectly photographed with flawless technique. I do wonder where the person is heading other than what looks like a long journey ahead. Superb. Well captured.
