The way the light is falling across this beautiful flooring, with a combination of lights and shadows, bring an added dimension to the shot. Looking more closely, the lighting is also gently dappled, creating attractive patterns on the tiles. Overall the exposure has been well controlled, sympathetic to the often dimly lit interiors of churches and cathedrals. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
I love this rather understated image of a typical tiled facade of homes in many parts of Portugal. Everything is well aligned, which to me is especially important with the subjct being square tiles, and everything looks exactly as the eye would see it, which I love. Little details help with the success of the shot, such as the half-open shutter and the partial inclusion of the contrastingly-coloured adjoining building. Congratulations on your winning image.
An unusual composition depicting a set of tiled steps, which gives full attention to the beautifully coloured and patterned tiles. The diagonal composition brings a nice abstract to the shot; still recognisable but adding interest. Exposure is balanced throughout, meaning the beautiful colours are consistant across the frame. Congratulations on your third place finish.
I love this capture of the hotch-potch of colours and patterns in the tiles decorating this building. The contrasting colours initially draw the eye, and there is so much for the eye to explore and enjoy. The image has been well composed, with a good viewpoint capturing a variety of different details, centering on the blue bird, which I am sure gives us only the merest hint as to the splendour of the rest of the structure. Well done on your top ten placing.
What I especially like about this image is the way the high-level circular mirror has been included in the composition, giving us a sneaky peek as to what is behind and around the corner. The scene looks to be filled with tiles, with the perspective drawing the eye across and into the frame. The black and white conversion has worked well, with a good balance of tones. Well done on your top ten placing.
This image rose up through the placings during my reviews of the entries, and I like it more the more I look. Great use of leading lines to draw the viewer down into the tube to the figures in the distance. The diminishing perspective is a strong element, but it avoids over-dominating as it is balanced by the curving arched lines following the rounded shape of the tunnel. Lighting has been well handled, as clearly from the location there is a complete absence of natural light, instead relying on some potentially harsh overhead strip lighting. Great colours throughout, rich but natural. Congratulations on your second place finish.
A super detail shot of the intricate and beautifully elborate carvings and tiles. It can sometimes be quite overwhelming when trying to find a great shot of such places, and I think you have done really well here to just focus on a relatively small area of detail. There is enough variety to give a real sense of the place, and we are close enough in to be able to appreciate the beauty of the architecture. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
A great image looking across the rooftops, dominated by teracotta tiles across the entire frame. I like that we are not so high up that we see only the rooftops, as the little glimpses of the walls and windows etc add interest to the scene. The colours are rich and warm, creating a lovely mood. Composition works well, with the stronger lines of the tiled buildings running on a pleasing diagonal across the frame. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
The close-in view and compressed perspective attracted me to this image. The subject is quite unusual, with these attractively shaped an beautifully decorated benches caoturing the attention to invite further exploration. Colours look natural and not over-saturated. Positioned close to the subject and using a relatively wide aperture with a telephoto lens has created a shallow depth of field, with the near bench in full focus, and the rest of the scene falling softly out of focus. Well done on your top ten placing.
There were a number of entries in this contest showing the fabulous Azulejo tiles of Portugal, but this one was my favourite. We get an indication of the intricate design, but what I especially like is that it has not been captured too close-in, so we get an indication of the context and a sense of scale. Composition works well, and the inclusion of the bare stone upright, the windows and the traffic light all give a sense of realism. The figure is well-placed in the composition too and brings the shot to life. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of tiles. The tiles can be any type, in any location, inside or outdoors. Images could show tiles being used for purely functional purposes such as waterproofing roofs, floors and bathrooms, or can be decorative in the form of mosaics, beautiful wall tiles or decorative household objects. The tiles must be the focal point of your image. Entries can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your images.
