Watches, Clocks and Timepieces

April 2024

With the watch positioned diagonally across the frame, this image's composition is pleasant and distraction-free. The lighting, beautifully soft and diffused, illuminates the dial evenly without creating any reflections onto the glass, which is not an easy quest when it comes to photographing watches. Last but not least, the interesting choice of background adds welcome texture and depth to the image. I believe that further editing to remove minor scratches on the case would have elevated this already professional-looking image to the level of a top-notch watch advert. Regardless, this is a successful image that truly stands out.

This is a truly unique capture that very much stood out from all other entries in this contest. I love and admire the photographer's creativity behind this 7-minute exposure as explained in the image description. The result is eerie, magical and relaxing to look at. Even though unusually positioned tucked away in the bottom corner, the clock is still obviously centre stage in the shot. The cherry on the cake is the fact that the clock appears twice: once hanging on the wall and once reflected into the mirror. This further enhances the image's magical atmosphere, making the viewer feel like they're in a scene of Alice in Wonderland, where there's a whole other world waiting to be discovered on the other side of that mirror. This is a great shot with a unique vision. Well done!

I fell in love with this stunning capture the moment I saw it. The flowers style the watch beautifully and work well with the shallow depth of field that blurs the flowers in the foreground whilst maintaining the watch pin-sharp. The watch itself is well lit and with good hand placement (the hands don't overlap with any of the branding/writing on the dial). The antique pink and yellows, and the subtle sepia finish, create soft, pleasant and classic colour grading that I could admire for days. This image just makes me long for more. Specifically, even though I like the unusual composition, I wish the shot extended on the right hand side. I wish there was more space on the right of the watch so that the watch itself would be two thirds into the frame rather than up against the edge. I am in love with this shot and I thoroughly believe it deserves first place.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** How have we humans measured time over the years? Clocks, watches, timepieces, and nowadays mobile phones, of course. But did you also know that obelisks were used by the Ancient Egyptians as a kind of giant shadow clock, or sundial, and what about advent candles, stone circles, and hourglasses, which all measure time in different ways.
