Great contest!

This is such a beautiful portrait of a tulip that has been shown to us as an abstract with the petals furled over in a way that makes you believe it’s not a tulip at all, there is a feel of mysticism about the image, I like the framing and the toning and the way the light seems to come out from the centre giving this image an appeal not always seen in a b&w image, its such a bold and well constructed image and yet pleasing to the eye and worthy of my top ten. Thank you for sharing it with us and very well done.

This is a great image,I know this flower is usually red in colour and not easy to convert to black and white, I like the way the light shimmers off the leaves which softens the image , the centre framing is ideal for this flower head and fits the brief perfectly, thank you for sharing with us and very well done.

This image for me is a great piece of art, this image ticked the boxes well,it pops out from the black background beautifully ,it's a perfect example of following the brief and creating an image that shows the photographer has taken great care to bring out the detail with a slow shutter speed that is easily lost with some colour photography, thank you for sharing with us and, very well done.

I'm very pleased to say that there were many many images in this contest that were on brief and I thank everyone for their entries which made this competition very tricky to judge ,the standard was very high all round and many deserved something but I have to make decisions on all the images and get them down to the winning ones so don't be disheartened if you didn't gain an award this time, now to this contest and the ones I feel have deserved my consideration-----This image stood out for me with the gentle flow from the dark centre to the delicate softness of the edges, for me its framed perfectly, this example of a black and white image clearly shows the little details in the petals that usually get missed in a colour image, the feel of a pencil illustration is not easy in a photograph and I can see the care that the photographer has taken to achieve this in processing a beautiful work of art that is deserving of its place. Thank you for sharing it with us and, Very well done.

This is a beautifully constructed image that is both pleasing to the eye and could grace the wall of any gallery ,I like that you used a square format for your work that centres the bloom ,personally I'm not a fan of putting a frame around an image but you could be forgiven as the subject shot is beautifully executed ,thank you for sharing it with us and, very well done.

This image says a lot about reading the brief, the photographer has stated using some tracing paper behind the Rose to give the plain background that was asked for and then placed it against the window for back lighting, the result is a super image and shows what can be done with a little thought, very well done.

This image offers something different to the viewer, I love the way the photographer has given us a insight into the different parts of this poppy, it's almost an illustration of its working parts, the framing is spot on for me and centres my eye into the heart of the bloom which then wanders to the other parts leading out to its edges, it's overall so educational and yet so beautifully created. Thank you for sharing with us and, very well done.

This image of an abstract chrysanthemum is brave to say the least, it fits the brief perfectly and may not be to everyone’s taste but that is what art is about, you love it or hate it but it gets a reaction and no doubt will be talked about but for me the softness and hardness blend together to make an almost metallic feel and says in its own way “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” the photographer should be praised for their bravery but also for their skill in taking an every day object and creating an art form that for me is well worth a place in my top 10, thank you sharing it with us and, very well done.

Meet the judge

Congratulations on a super image. For me this image works very well on a white background, the delicacy of the daffodil is perfectly shown .A Flower head in black and white is not the easiest to get right and for me this ticked many of the boxes, you have achieved a very delicate feel to a simple daffodil that is very pleasing to the eye, it was very close to my top ten so very well done.

Brief

See more contest details

For this challenge I would like you to strip away the colour from a SINGLE FLOWER HEAD, with or without the stem. Black and white photography can show little details that get missed in colour images. I will be looking for originality, good lighting, sharpness, angle, texture and imaginative thinking. The background should be plain with all detail on the subject. You can take your shot inside or outside you decide - you could try holding a piece of black or white paper behind the bloom. You will be surprised how beautiful a flower head is in black and white. Importantly I require your image to have a title. As always, follow the brief, and remember this contest is BLACK & WHITE ONLY. (If people do not follow the brief, please mark them as "not on brief")
