Hats

May 2025

I love how different this capture is from the other entries, with colours and composition being the elements that most set it apart.

The three subjects (one just about visible in the bottom left corner of the frame), representing three different ways of getting around, are all nicely lined up to make a near-diagonal from one corner to the centre of the frame. This imaginary line creates a sense of appealing dynamism.

To complete the picture is the sun, that backlights the subjects and projects neat shadows in front of them, interesting textures, and the colours, bright and entirely pleasing to the eye.

This is a great capture that features hats in a more subtle but entirely successful way.

Urban meets feminine in this image, captured in a cinematic vibe that sets it apart from the rest.

The contrast between the dark, cold environment and the graceful female subject is intriguing and appealing. The back light, that catches the subject's silhouette, adds softness to the shot and almost 'combines' the urban world behind with the elegant subject in front.

The colour grading, with its enhanced cyans, adds interest and further enhances the cinematic vibe of the shot, making it appear like a still from a movie.

There is a story behind this image, and poetry in its well executed capture.

From the interestingly styled subject to her pose, the setting and textures: many elements work together to perfection in this striking portrait.

But the thing that excites me the most is the image's colour scheme. Mostly made of complementary tones, it is perfectly harmonious, like it was studied to the detail. The blue on the distressed wall and that on the curtain; the brown on the stripes and that on the wall; the whites and greys: not one single out-of-place item, not one single conflicting hue. It's visual perfection.

This one-of-a-kind portrait ticks all the boxes and thoroughly deserves its place in the top 10.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** It’s all about ‘shaped head coverings’ (Oxford English Dictionary) in this week’s ranked contests, otherwise known as hats. Maybe you’ve captured the exotic creations of a milliner, snapped a policeman in his helmet, or been looking for hankie hats on the beach for your homage to Martin Parr.
