Lamp Posts

September 2021

An atmospheric shot, simple but powerful. The single bike adds a certain sense of solitariness to the image. For me the edges of the image merge too much with the background and I would have added a thin white border to the image. The high up vantage point works well and the uncluttered background gives prominence to the lampost, bike and bollard. I like the way the photographer has made use of the light from the lampost with the edges of the frame disappearing into shadows - again emphasising the solitariness of the scene. The image works well in black and white and has been very skillfully processed.

A very interesting take on the lamp post theme. The viewpoint is great with a simple plain, sandy (?) background to make the subjects stand out. I love the way the the lampost and and shadow look like a clock at 10 am with the human interest at 4 pm ! I like the idea of having a border but just wondering whether a slightly less wide one might have been better ? All a matter of opinion of course but I feel that this border slightly takes attention a way from the photo. A smashing image which I'm sure could equally do well in a street photography competition. It works much better in black and white which helps the graphic nature of the shot.

A lovely, creative image of an old fashioned lamp post reflected in a pavement puddle . The image has been inverted (which I know divides photographic opinion) but I like inverted reflections as I feel you can "read" the photo more easily. I might have been tempted to add a small white border to the image to bring it out from the background. This image has lots of atmosphere and I like the way the lamp post and central characters are bracketed nicely by the figures on the left and the leaves and branches at the upper right of the image.

This photo stood out immediately for me on so many levels. This is a Lamp Post competition and the lamp post takes pride of place - bang in the middle of the image - a bold decision on the part of the photographer . The marvellous two circular air vents provide a perfect symmetry for the lamp post and set it off beautifully. I feel that the edges of the image merge slightly too much with the background - and had it been me - I would have added a thin white line round the border. The human interest is a big bonus and the gentleman is perfectly placed in the frame. Finally the lighting is gorgeous and adds an air of mystery to the scene. The image has been processed to perfection. A brilliant shot and a worthy winner.

Another photo with the "wow" factor and a fantastic entry for a lamp post competition with no fewer than 11 lamposts prominently framed in the foreground! By the way I love the fact that there are 2 bulbs missing from the lamp posts - adds a quirky touch. The background is dramatic but rendered slightly out of focus which gives greater prominence to the foreground. I am tempted to say that the image is a little overprocessed for my taste, but then maybe this is what this particular image needs. It's certainly a great image in terms of quirkiness, spookiness and a surreal quality....and of course 11 lamp posts.

A striking image of architectural detail, well framed, with a prominently placed lamp post coming in at a diagonal angle at the corner of the frame. The photographer has framed the photo to make it appear that the lamp post is a vital part of the overall pattern of the buiding rather than something standing beside the building. In this way the photographer has made great use of the 2 dimensional nature of photography. I might have been tempted to frame or crop the image so that the lampost emerged exactly from the corner to add further to the geometric shapes in the photo. But of course this might not have been possible. A great image nonetheless.

The humble lamppost. Old ones are considered beautiful and evocative. New ones less so. All are invited to this contest, whether shot at night doing what they do best, or in the daytime taking a rest and attracting the occasional attention of dogs on leads.

A lovely image of 2 lamposts at the blue hour. I presume that the lights have just come on as day turns into night ,which gives a nice sense of time to the image. The seagull lit by one of the bulbs gives a point of interest and humour to the image . It almost looks a bit like a stage set. For me the negative space to the left works well and balances the image nicely. I'm wondering whether the blues of the posts and the railings in the photo are a little oversaturated ? But a bold and striking image nonetheless.

The lamp post takes pride of place slightly off centre. The post provides a striking diagonal line leading the eye up to the light. Normally when you look up at a lamp post you expect to see sky but instead we have a dramatic and striking metallic backdrop which sets off the lighter shade of the lamp post beautifully. I like the way the diagonal lines of the underside of the bridge contrast with the those of the lamp post. Black and white rendition is the right decision and the image has been processed with great skill - a full range of tones and with due attention given to textures. In particular I like the grimy surface of the interior of the lamp shade. Perhaps the biggest compliment I could pay to this photo is that I feel that it is a scene which I suspect most people would pass by without even looking up. The photographer has spotted the potential and created an original interpretation of the subject matter.

A great entry for a lamp post competition with 4 lamposts in a receding line across the frame. A calm image taken at the "blue hour" with a magnificent background to set off the lamp posts. Photos sometimes don't work very well if the horizon is on the mid point of the frame but with this particular image I think the central horizon works fine as it gives prominence to the lamp posts. The wavy patterned pavements form a nice "lead in" to the lamp posts. There seems to be a vignette at either end of the photo which gives greater prominence to the central lampost and the two interesting benches. A peaceful, attractive image.

This photo certainly has the "wow" factor. Although the lamp post occupies a relatively small space in the the frame it's location right in the middle gives it due promience. A graphic image with lovely symmetry and straight lines. The shape of the ineresting modernistic lamp is mirrored in the patterns of of the four windows . Also the forms which can be seen in the upper windows also mirror the design of the lamp. A very striking and contrasty image. It is very well processed and the photographer has avoided the tempation to oversaturate the colours.

A very striking and bold image with plenty of atmosphere with a prominently placed beautiful lamp post . I am not normally a big fan of fairly pronounced HDR but this shot has won me over. The detail is absolutely fantastic . I love the receding lamposts in the distance and the partially hidden figure - who I didn't initially notice. I just want to get on this tram and explore it! For a specifically lamp post competition I do feel slightly that the magnificent tram is vying for my attention. But maybe this a niggling point. It's a great photo ,works very well in black and white and the lighting and detail in the shadows are very good.
