Congratulations on submitting the winning entry in the mosaics contest. It is indeed an emotional image. Composing the image in offset columns has provided a challenge to you as the photographer, but I think you have chosen your position well. Additionally you have managed to provide just enough background to give some context to the art, without the background becoming too distracting.. It looks to have been an overcast day which is ideal, as soft even lightreduces the risk of reflections from the often reflective materials used in mosaic making. Thank you for bringing this piece to our notice and once again well done.

I liked this image of modern mosaic work because it shows detail as well as the overall creation but also includes the context. I think a close up would have been a lot less appealing. You have coped well with the artificial lighting which can often result in glare and reflections from the small pieces of glazed cerami tile. I guess you may have had to be patient to avoid people getting in the way. Congratulations on gaining fifth place.
With larger artworks there is usually the dilemma of showing the whole thing in an image or focussing in on the details. You have solved this by presenting a carefully chosen trytych. You were the only photographer to submit a tryptych. Thus we can see the whole of the mosaic, as well as details from two areas within it. Reflections are always a potential problem with mosaics, especially those in buildings with bright lighting. You have managed to minimise it to a less important part of the main image. There looks to be enough detail there to allow for some burning if you have access to post processing software. Nevertheless I felt that your presentation deserved fourth place in this contest.
Meet the judge
Of all the entries this image was the only one to show a mosaic artist at work. I liked it because it shows how mosaics are created, both in terms of design and cutting of the tessarae. The reflection from the mirror is a little distracting and perhaps a slightly tighter crop may have helped. The mirror have helped though to balance the light in the workroom and you have avoided any significant shadows or unwanted reflections. Congratulations on gaining second place.

You are very fortunate to have such ready access to mosaic art and I can see why this would be a favourite. This is a wonderful piece of modern mosaic work, beautifully designed and carefully created. As for your image you have captured the piece well, avoiding any unwanted reflections. The straight in front (or above) view usually works well with mosaics when there is an even light source. Congratulations on gaining third place.

Mosaics are an art form in which pieces of coloured stone, tile or glass, etc, are embedded into a substrate to form a piece of art. Whilst many show pictorial content, in other cultures patterns, text and geometric shapes are used. In this contest I am looking for photos which show the quality and characteristics of mosaics. You may show all or part of a mosaic of any size and type, eg, wall, floor, panel etc, and the mosaic can be of any age. Whatever and however you choose to present your image, the mosaic must be the obvious subject. Entries can be in colour or black and white. I hope to see some new and creative images. In the interests of fairness I ask that you do not submit images incorporating any means of identification such as a digital signature, banner or text.
