Great image! I love the unconventional silhouette and creative approach you’ve taken here. Great use of perspective and lighting; I also appreciate all of the detail the macro lens is able to capture, including the leaf veins and colors. Well done!

This one really stuck with me. The combination of the sunset reflection, the inverted landscape, and the silhouette of the wistful-looking cowboy make for an intriguing, striking scene. I especially like how you’ve caught a lone band of orange sky at the bottom of the frame, too. Great job using the waning light to your advantage! Well done.

Silhouettes offer an opportunity to focus on the outline, the shape of a subject. Often this is the outline of a person or animal, meaning the shape of the whole body for full length portraiture, or if a bust portrait then often a side-on portrait that shows the contours of the face. Silhouettes are traditionally shot such that the subject is very dark, and the background lighting accentuates that, either by being correctly exposed, over-exposed, or through some clever lighting of the subject in the case of the header image for the contest.

Lovely! Great job with framing and layering here, as well as waiting for the right moment; I love how the bird aligns with the moon, and how you have captured it as it’s actually singing. The ambient “blue hour” light is nice as well. Well done!

Ah, yes, the solar eclipse—a silhouette of the moon! I appreciate your interpretation of the contest theme. Great job preparing for and capturing this historic moment; I especially like the warm glow seeping around the edge of the moon, and how everything else fades into pitch black. Well done!

I’ve been to this region many times, but I’ve never seen the wind turbines quite like this. Great job using a slower shutter speed to capture their movement, as well as the ambient colors of the surrounding desert. Gorgeous shot. Well done!

Fabulous! Great job waiting for and capturing just the right moment here. I love how you’ve managed to include the skateboarder in the frame without actually photographing the person’s body; the shadow is a perfect stand-in. Wise choice to leave this image grayscale, too; it draws attention to the silhouette.. Well done!

Intriguing image! I love how the shapes of these two individuals complement each other. It creates a bit of an optical illusion and reminds me of a Rorschach inkblot test. The stark contrast between the shadow and light adds to this effect. Great job!

Lovely pastoral image. Great job layering the silhouettes here to create a rich, detailed scene. I especially like the rim lighting on the wool, which makes the sheep look both familiar and otherworldly. Also, that sky! What a marvelous sunset. Well done!

Great macro silhouette! I appreciate getting such a detailed glimpse at the praying mantis’ stance and habitat. The shallow depth-of-field accentuates this.; one insect’s body is nicely isolated against orbs of light in the background. Nice twilight color palette, too. Well done!

Ha, well, you don’t see something like this every day! Great job capturing this memorable event and moment. I like how you’ve isolated the woman’s form (and witch’s hat) against the watery backdrop. The paddle is like an alternative broom. Well done!

Great job capturing the moment here. In addition to the silhouette of the climber scaling the rocks above, I especially appreciate that you’ve gotten the climber’s reflection in the pool of water below—such a fantastic detail. I like the pastel color palette and the framing of the image, too. Well done!

That is one large fish! I love the emphasis on scale here (no pun intended…) and how the aquatic life dwarfs the child. Great job waiting for the fish to be silhouetted, too, which accentuates this difference in size. The variation in blue tones is nice, as well. Well done!

Wow, stunning shot! Fantastic job with lighting; the golden rim light really isolates and emphasizes the heron’s form and movement. I’d love to know more about how the strobes were arranged for this. The reflections and warm tones are lovely as well. Well done!

This is a trippy one! I love the optical illusion created by the illuminated stairs; to me, it looks as if the figures are floating against a geometric backdrop. Great job turning a mundane activity—ascending/descending stairs—into an intriguing abstract. Well done!

I love the detail of this image. The silhouettes do a nice job of highlighting the diversity of crosses and grave markers present in the cemetery. I appreciate the muted color palette, too; it creates an appropriate mood for the location. Well done!
