Small Boats

With a warmth and sense of tranquility of the two boats sitting on the still water, balanced by the painterly sky and its deeper reflection with white mist skimming the waters edge, splitting the scene amidst golds, greens and blues for a really lovely balance of serenity.

Having the foresight and knowledge to make this image, which otherwise would have been a dark empty space has culminated in a stand out photograph. By light painting the boats with a torch in the last few seconds of a long exposure, the photographer has managed to capture and illuminate all of the the moored boats, with their reflections in the water glowing, making for a compositionally pleasing subject row, on what must of been a very still lake at the time. The long exposure has accentuated the movement of the clouds in the sky for a striking finale hovering over the mountain silhouette and surrounding lake.. Stunning! Great spectacle of subject matter for this abandoned derelict wreck like a piece of art strutting out of the sea. Nice composition slightly off centre in the frame leaving the wreck prominent as the focus glowing with green sea algae and moss throughout its wooden frame mixed with muted tones of the sea and sky during a long exposure.

Smooth muted tones of the boats, water and sky, placed at the centre of the frame immersed in the silky depths, revealing a great image even in dull flat light. The red on the abandoned derelict boat in the middle gives the image a cohesive feel flanked by the other two boats of subtle brown and green.

Having to commend over 700 photographs has not been easy with so many wonderful photographs entered into the "small boats"contest, including this one of course. This image stuck in my mind all the way through and is a gorgeous portrayal of Loch Achray, in Scotland. From side lighting on the boats that are pin sharp, to the mist and calm water, to the soft pastel colours and of course, that white house in the distance on the shoreline, just gorgeous.

A classic quintessential scene of mist engulfing moored boats on the water enveloped by low moving cloud coupled with subtle light which brings detail into the boats and their colours whilst silhouetting their masts and buoys. The subtle light fills the sky with painterly colour which is also partially reflected in the water and holding detail in the backdrop of this scene. Beautifully done, this image would grace any gallery wall.

Fabulous capture of three asian fishermen almost dance like in their technique on their small boats, making for a nicely composed image with the suns orb glowing above the mountainous backdrop, streaking its golden light across the rippled water between the fishermen, for a lovely composed image.

Stunning composition of one of the decaying boats at Dungeness in Kent, SE England under an arch of stars from the galaxy above. The boat is perfectly lit with the prevailing natural light from the low horizon bringing out the texture of its wooden panels with that arch of stars framing the boat below.

Subdued light clipping these boats that line up on the emerald coloured lake below the snow covered mountains and surrounding forest, nestled in safety from the boat house half in shadow and half in light of the reflected scenic location under a cloudy sky and a really lovely balance of colours

The wonder of nature may steal the show with the last leaf clinging on to one of the trees in this image but the composition is wonderfully balanced by the small boat and its occupant. The Monochromatic scene and the single colour of the leaf amongst the mist shrouding the water of the silhouetted trees add to the scene rather than detract from the subject of the boat and occupants, drawing the viewers eyes back and forth.

Dominant blues interrupted by the red masts of the boat and yellows of the oars and lampposts up on the pier with the boat seemingly cornered at its mooring nestled between the pier and sea with an emptiness, seeking rescue by its owner.

IA small white yacht awakening to pink, purple and blue hues, reflected majestically in the calm water of this lake, giving a sense of peace enriched with the fluorescence of the floating buoy. Lovely balance of colours make this image a joy to view.

Really nice capture of throwing a fishing net lit by the golden sun which is illuminating the textures and outline whilst silhouetting the fisherman and his boat, making for a great documentary style travel image, set in a beautiful natural environment and landscape.

Looking like a painting, the colours in this image are sumptuous and blend so well together, from the browns to the contrasting orange and yellow of the sunlit sky. There is a hint of mist beyond the calm foreground water matching the colour of the boat for this commended image.

A striking image that looks like it has been sketched with a pencil, with he middle of the frame containing the boats as they meander through the space in the water drawing your eyes back and forth from the net housing placed at the bottom right, making for a delightful image and composition.
