The Street Beneath Your Feet

This is a great shot, and what this competition is all about. There is a rich, dark quality about it which really works. The manhole cover is almost camouflaged which is a nice feature. Pleasing composition with the white road markings rising up from the bottom right corner and exiting the frame in the top left corner. A nice choice of angle and a real sense of texture. Great angle for a shot. A lovely abstract composition in its simplicity of colours and composition and very nicely aligned within the frame. I wonder if the central banister were to be placed further to the left or right within this image whether it might enhance the overall effect,, two thirds one set of steps, one third the other. This is a fantastic image. The multifaceted brickwork on the ground contrasts so well with the deep black shadows. The diagonal line of the bricks stretching from the bottom right to the top left of the frame works perfectly and the placement of all the elements within the composition tie together exceedingly well for a really pleasing arrangement of shapes. The light coloured top of the figure is brilliant against the black and completes the photograph perfectly. This is a truly lovely image, and although there are a number of components to the photograph, it still feels as though the real emphasis is on the street surface itself. The different elements within the shot seem to work in perfect harmony and the angle from which the photograph is taken leads the eye swiftly and satisfyingly to the end of the lane. The ground itself features a number of interesting patterns, combining the cobbles, the paving stones, the street markings and the repetition of light and shade on the right side, all of which add interest A wonderfully textural image which works incredibly well in black and white.

The yellow street markings running diagonally through the frame give this image a lovely structure. The figures are well placed within the space and the transparency of the umbrellas is nice in that the sweeping yellow line, the backbone of this photograph, goes undisturbed by them. A nice combination of surface pattern and texture as well as a pleasing compositional division between the dark of the road and the lighter shades of the pavement. Possibly a dialling up of the saturation of the image slightly and a deepening of the tones might have enhanced the overall effect just that little bit. This is a delightful shot, finding true beauty in the gutter. A wonderfully sharp image, the focus in the central section of the photograph working really well, emphasizing the text on the metalwork. Taken at a superb angle, this image feels almost intimate. The three main colours are trjuly harmonious in their simplicity and the different elements of the image are beautifully proportioned, with that wonderful leading line taking us from right to left and bottom to top. A wonderfully dramatic image, theatrical almost. The shadow cutting diagonally across the picture seems perfectly placed, both within the shaft of light and within the frame as a whole. Such high contrast works really well in this photograph . Lovely to see that hint of the curve featuring in the upper left of the shot, adding that extra interest. This is a great image and perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this competition. The picture is full of interest without becoming overly busy. This is all about the street markings and seems to be a real celebration of stripes. The curve to the left of the image balances it out just nicely and the rule of two thirds works well here, with the pavement just featuring in that upper third section of the frame. This is a stunning image. It captures the essence of the competition perfectly and demonstrates a fantastic perception in noticing and picking out the remarkable in the mundane. A wonderful combination of deep contrast within the reflection of the figure and street signs and the delicate, more subtle patterning of the clouds and lines of the paving stones. A lovely, gritty intensity to this picture. A superb capturing of texture. Black and white is a great choice for this image, placing full emphasis on the shapes, lines, texture and sheen. Wonderful deep, rich tones. The vertical lines to the right hand side of the image balance the composition nicely. The cigarette butt has a good placement within the frame and the way the light reflects off the metallic band on the filter ties it in nicely with the other metallic highlights, Great image. This is a striking image. The careful lining up of the tiles with the edge of the right side of the picture is notable. This is a really beautiful shot. Very nice composition and a great intensity of contrast between light and shade. The cropping at the very tip of the shadow works well, as it does at the very top of the fencing, just leaving that streak of sunlight bouncing off the top edge visible. The leading lines at the forefront of the image work brilliantly in balance with the dense patterning in the upper half of the picture. A delightful celebration of shape and pattern. A lovely image, featuring great texture and light and shade balance. It’s almost tactile, you can really feel the paving stones fade into rubble. This works particularly well in black and white and the angle and composition of the shot are commendable. A good choice of angle from which to take the photograph. The Autumn leaves combined with the reflection of the lights on the wet surface of the pavement work nicely.. The emphasis is completely on the 'street beneath your feet' here.

What a great shot. The triangle straddling the frame is really clever, as is the way the blue line runs parallel to the reflection of the top of the fence.
