A fine example of a beautifully captured interior which celebrates the classic architecture in this Great Hall. I like the soft, low contrast look which seems to suit the scene well, and allows us to see a lot of details throughout the scene. You have done well to hold back the light pouring through the windows and reflecting on the shiny floor, and the perspective has been perfectly corrected bearing in mind the extreme wide angle. Well done!

This is one of several images entered into the "Tiles"contest by the same photographer which cannot fail to grab the attention. I am not usually a fan of selective colour, but I think it has been used here to great effect. That, along with the wide perspective seem to suck me downwards into the picture. I am sure in reality the scene would not be nearly so striking, but you have realised the potential for drama and produced a great image - a worthy top ten finish.

This image was in and out of my top ten for a while, but eventually rose to a top three placing. I am unsure how much of the image is "real" and how much digitally constructed, but for me that doesn't matter - I find the whole scene strangely captivating, and even after looking for a long while, I still can't decide whether I find the mood it generates calming or slightly menacing - maybe that ambiguity is the attraction. I really love your choice of the soft shades of blue and grey, and for me the quality of the image is obvious. Lovely work, congratulations!

Your capture of this wonderful mosaic artwork makes me want to visit this church to see it for myself! I really like your choice of viewpoint - looking across the church at an angle, rather than directly down the aisle. The muted colour palette is beautiful, and you have managed the exposure very well, in what I suspect would have been tricky lighting conditions. There is a slight softness to the scene, which also adds to the beauty. A much deserved second placing.

The vivid colours you have captured initially caught my attention, and you have done well to retain the richness in colour in what looks to be very harsh sunlight. I also like the composition, with the two seats centrally placed in front of the fish mosaic. A perfect choice of subject for this contest with tiles filling the scene from top to bottom! Well deserving of a top ten finish.

As soon as I saw this image, it stood out from the rest. I imagine the original colours were rich and beautiful, so it was a bold decision to convert the picture to monochrome. But I think that decision was the key to it's success, as without the distraction of colour, we can see the wonderful shapes, forms and patterns in this fabulous architecture, which you have so perfectly captured. Exposure, focus and composition are all spot on for me too. Congratulations on your winning image!

Your low viewpoint gives a great view of the tiles on these steps, and adds an interesting perspective to the scene. I love the active pose of the little girl - she is a lovely inclusion in the scene, by providing a vital touch of human interest, but she is far enough away to avoid dominating the image. The nice bright colours complete the shot to make it a top ten image. Well done!

This is a beautiful abstract image. Although it is "just" a photo of some tiles covered in water, there is plenty for the eye to wander over and enjoy. Your control of the light has been very well done - some lovely highlights to show the ripples in the water, but which have not been blown and over-exposed. I also think it was a wise decision to avoid and temptation to over-saturate the colours too. The more I look, the more I like - well done!

Tiles are thin, flat slabs of hard wearing material such as baked clay (e.g. glazed ceramic, terracotta), stone (e.g. marble, slate) or other materials such as linoleum, carpet or glass. They can be used to cover walls, floors or roofs, or placed on objects such as tabletops or plant pots. They may be used for purely functional purposes such as waterproofing roofs and showers, or can be decorative in the form of mosaics or beautiful wall decorations. In this contest, I want to see your best shots of any type of tiles, in any location, inside or outdoors. You may choose to show a minimalist scene of plain tiles, flat surfaces & sharp lines. Or you may opt to show highly decorated and coloured surfaces or intricate designs. Images can show a wide scene or close up detail, but whichever you choose, the tiles must be the focal point of your image. Use your skills of composition, lighting and focusing to show tiles at their best. I look forward to seeing your best images.
