Vintage

Old books, the old and deect watch, the running floor camera with its bellows, the old fashioned photographs, enlarged old-school style with a frame, hang up on a line with classic clothes-pegs, ... all that, including the dark sepia style finishing with some decent vignetting, adds to the perfect vintage image.

"Vintage" is the theme of my challenge and this one is clearly on topic. Everything in this image is, or resembles, something vintage.

Even the monochrome finishing and the rather strong vignetting adds to the vintage look.

What isn't too vintage is the rather modern idea of photographing the doubtless beautiful model from behind.. The hair just done, the lady seems to be busy with her morning toilette, but considering her dress, she may get perpared for some social evening event.

It is quite unusual too, amongst all the other submissions. Between the others, and lots of them are excellent photographs, this one is so outstanding because of its uniqueness, that it wasn't difficult for me to pick it as the winning one.

The overall scene. imperfection with that tissue thingy in front of the mirror, the shabby old mirror as such, the dust on the bar, On product photos, of course, I would have criticised the dirty glass and bottle. Here that just adds to the perfectionally set up scene. .

The person, the focus on the image in the mirror, the hat, the dress, the hair dress, the - I guess - post processing on the mirror, ... al that adds to the overall expression.

I had to look up ARP, to be honest. As I used to visit Essex rather frequently int h 2000th, I did not have to look up Chelmsford though.

Being quite reluctant to picking some military themed sujet for the top 10, I was relieved to learn, that the Wardens of the ARP served for civil defense purposes.

I have chosen this one as number two of the top 10 because of the intense mood it transports, the fine details of the skin as well as the texture of the cloth, which were perfectly worked out in the post. The kinda reduced colours just add to this overall expression.

The fact, that I like smoking a pipe every know and then may have helped a bit, too.

The challenge theme is "Vintage". As the guy running it I should not reward any picture that is off topic.

You may understand that I had difficulties considering this one as on topic enough for giving a high-rated reward.

For the Sujet itself, especially as classic hats often have revivals in modern fashion for men.

So, in dubio pro reo, it isn't off topic by sujet and therefor considered well on topic. :-)

What finally made me decide to pick it for the top 10 is that it remembers me potential film noir scenes, which are clearly vintage (or resemble it).

Could have been a scene of some Edgar Wallace film or some Raymond Chandler story.

Rewarding it with No 3 of the judged ranks was quite easy then, because I like it so much and because it is so unique amongst all the other submissions (of which many are excellent.)
