This is a wonderful landscape shot and fitted the brief perfectly. What a landscape. Living in the fens of east anglia mountains are something that I never get to see so I thank you for visually transporting me to somewhere quite splendid. The whole shot is very clean and crisp with some classic colours. The reddish brown of the train gives a nice contrast to the blue of the sky and the white of the snow and clouds. I'm not naturally drawn to people in landcsape shots so it's good to see just the train and no skiers/snowboarders anywhere. I'm presuming that there could be a few in the vicinty due to the ski tracks just to the left of the train. A lovely example of a train in the landscape so well done and thank you for entering the contest.
Firstly, thank you for entering the contest. There were a few shots that were taken from the train carriage but I really liked this one as it draws the eye of the viewer towards the tunnel entrance just as the engine is about to enter. It's a very nicely composed shot and uses the rule of thirds very well with the placement of the tunnel entrance. I liked the fact that it was another landscape that filled the whole frame which helps to keep the eye focussed on the train and carriages but allows it to wander to the structure of the bridge and cliff face below. Had it been me I would have cropped out the litttle white line in the bottom left of the shot and maybe the very end carriage to just the leave the two blue ones and the three red ones. Only a personal thing though. All in all a very good shot of a dramatic locomotive landscape.
Thank you for entering the contest and well done on making my top ten. I must admit it was in and out of my top ten a few times but it had to be there beacuse it's such a good shot. I like how the photographer has managed to capture the train coming out of Totley tunnel and managed to keep the lines nice and tight. Not the easiset of tasks when you're caught out with timings. I know that feeling. The train is in a great part of the frame and I guess it's coming out of the tunnel rather than entering it due to the colourings of the livery. What I also really like is the fact the whole frame is filled and because the tunnel entrance is shown there's a liitle bit of railway architecture history to be seen too. Possibly it could have a little exposure tweak and maybe a wee bit of straightening but they are only personal observations and certainly not suggestions. A terrific shot with a really nice sense of speed. As a little side issue and with reference your title my son is 99% certain the Freighliner is Class 66623, one of the "celebrity" sheds now to be seen in Freightliners new orange livery. I bow to a 15 year olds knowledge.
I liked this shot mainly because of the colour palette. I really like the cold slate greys that are running though it as this helps to compliment the glow and subtle colours from the train crossing the bridge. The lights really give a great sense of warmth. There are some nice shapes to be seen with the curves and lines on the bridge and the ice on the water gives a little added texture to the scene. The train itself could possibly have been a little sharper to crisp up the horizontal lines but I apprecaite it's not that easy when objects are moving. What would have been nice would have been some info as I can't really tell from the photo where it's actually taken but I'm presuming it's not in the UK. I'm also a fan of titles as I feel these can help set a mood and feel of a photo so when entries are untitled it's a little disappointing. Only minor personal observations though. Overall a good shot so thank you for entering the contest.
This proved to be quite a difficult contest to judge with some fantatsic shots from around the globe, but it was one that was closer to home that I gave top spot to.
This was my first place choice because it was an instantly eye catching shot. Something tells me it's taken with the sun setting rather than at sunrise due to the saturation of the deep golden colours. The rich colours beautifully silhouette the infamous Ribblehead viaduct and the train passing over the top. Although the train is quite small in the whole scene, because of it's placement in front of the sun there is no missing it. My eye was drawn straight to the train and it gives a wonderful sense of scale to this beautiful, wild landscape.
The more I looked at the shot the more I found myself getting quite lost in the whole scene and that was one of the feelings I was hoping to get from the entries.
Diesel and electric trains can prove to be quite difficult to present in an appealing way but you've done a superb job with this diesel in it's natural environment.
Thank you very much for entering and congratulations on my first place.

For this contest I would like to see your photographs of moving trains/locomotives in the landscape. The landscape can be any type that you like, whether out in the countryside or within the city. The trains can be electric, diesel, passenger or freight, but please do not enter photos of steam trains. I would like to see trains that are moving, so no stationary trains/locomotives. The contest could prove a good opportunity for panning shots, but a blurred train/locomotive is acceptable. Entries can be colour or black and white but keep the post editing to a minimum please.
