Looking Down

May 2022

I really liked the simplicity of this photo. The colour and tone of this photo immediately transport the viewer to a holiday in the sunshine. The bleached out saturation adds to holiday feeling with the shadows and the ripples of the water giving depth and texture.

I really like the use of symmetry in this image. It is a lovely capture of a busy scene and I especially like how the items of food, such as the oranges pop out against the blue background. A very good image of a busy scene. Well done :)

This photo looks like scene from a dream. I love the tone of this image which enhances the dream like quality of the shot. The photographer has beautifully captured the texture of the clouds against the high rise architecture. Well executed - well done.

I really liked this photo of the robin looking down at its reflection in the water. A crisp and delicate photo capturing a lovely moment. This is a skilled wildlife photographer and a super interpretation of the the theme. Well done :)

I really like composition of this image. The photographer has clearly thought about the balance and I like the use of light to hi-light the figure on the left whilst the light back lights the figure on the right. I really like that photographer choose to make this image black and white and this has brought a lot to the shot. Well done :)

A super looking down photo which I feel is well balanced and composed. The road dividing the scene diagonally also serves to add smooth texture against the spiky tree tops. A lovely capture which expresses the vast scale of the landscape.

The colours textures and tones of this image are lovely. The way that the light catches the landscape makes this a lovely photo. The longer you look at the photo the more you see with the lines and curves across the scene. I also feel that the decision to use portrait was a good one.

I was drawn to this photo because of the iconic yellow taxi cabs and I liked that the photographer not only choose to single out the cabs but also used their camera skills to capture the trail of the cabs giving a sense of movement in the street scene. Very nice :)

I was drawn to this photo and it immediately made me smile. Lovely framing of the subjects with good use of saturation in the shot. It reminds me of the work of Martin Parr and I think that this is a well balanced and composed photo.

I thought that this was an interesting interpretation of the looking down theme. The spot light on the stage creates superb shadows of the actors and creates a story for the image. Additional drama is caused when you see the light capturing the figures on the left of the stage. A good capture.

I really like the simplicity of this image with the use of three colours. The photographer has intelligently waited for the subject with the umbrella to be contrasted against the red paint of the road. Very striking and I love how the more time you look at it you see all the different shapes and lines.

This is a super street shot and I thought that it was a clever and humorous interpretation of the theme. I really like that the photographer has thought about the relation between the subject and the scene. This shot stood out and the photographer should be pleased with this image. Well done :)

A lovely photo for this theme. I like the pops of colour against the rocky landscape which has had the saturation drained from it. Nice contrast of textures and colours across such a broad landscape. I like that the photographer has thought about how to present this photo by selecting the hot air balloons for initial focus.

I was immediately drawn to this photo due to its great composition. Such a simple concept for this theme well executed. The lines of the chairs and the tables spaced out so neatly make this a photo that could well be a drawing. Lovely tone and balance to this shot. Well done.

I was immediately drawn to this image and loved the interpretation of the theme looking down. The tones of the buildings reflected in the puddle against the cobbles gives a lovely balance. The photographer has clearly thought about their composition and executed it well. A worthy winner - well done :)

When we’re out and about with our cameras it can be easy to forget that the most interesting shots aren’t always staring us straight in the eye. In this case we’re focussing on the radically different view of the world that opens up to us when we look down. Looking down from a building in the way that Cartier Bresson used to do when shooting Parisian streets, or just looking down to see what’s on the road in front of you, or the patch of land you’re walking across.
