Mundane Places

February 2024

A keenly observed image. The low angle of view is inspired, and it cunningly uses the shape of the goalpost to create a frame within a frame. The orange sandbag adds a poignant focal point, and the colour contrast with the grass is pitch-perfect. The foggy atmosphere adds a lovely mood. Good work.

Simple, bold and beautiful. It's incredible how five full sacks can become such a captivating subject when seen, noticed and captured by someone with a creative vision. All aspects of this image feel artfully considered, from the placement of the sacks in the frame to handling the dark, moody, blue-hued wall.

At what point does the photographer's creativity transcend making a record of another artist's art and become something expressive in its own right? Well, here's a good example: the composition, appreciation of colour and the use of light all add something to the scene that brings another layer of expression and artistry. Good work.

Mundane and straightforward and yet so beautiful and elegant. The light in this ordinary scene has been artfully captured. However, the loaded presence of the pink noodle adds a sense of mysterious narrative and intrigue as it slivers through the frame. Excellent work. Keep it up.

Simply stunning! I love the reference to The Tempest by Giogiione, too; it is an inspired interpretation. I also love the way the covered contraptions take on a sculptural form in their own right, and to continue the history of art connection, perhaps they speak to Marcel Duchamp's ideas around Readymades or 'found art'.

A crisp, cool, and perfectly balanced compsotion. Another fine example of an image that proves there are excellent photo opportunities everywhere is if you look and approach image-making with an open mind and a willingness to embrace everything and anything as a potential subject.

The loan tree in an urban environment is a subject close to my heart. I love the way you have approached this beautifully seen scene. A limited and subtle colour palette, along with a delicate tonality, enhances the fragile existence of nature and humanity. Great work!

When wandering with our cameras we are often on the lookout for something exciting, something that fits our idea of being photogenic, or beautiful. But what if you started taking pictures of the ‘boring’ places, the back of the shops, the car park, the gate to the local field, or the side of your house? There are many opportunities close at hand to explore, to frame and compose, and to study with your camera and your eye, asking what can be found that is interesting there.

This is an excellent capture. The slightly mysterious narrative and sense of humour make this image shine. However, attention to detail also gives it an edge, for example, the perfectly aligned verticles, the expert handling of tones and the mono conversion along with the tight composition.

The atmospheric fog, the precise alignment of the goalposts, the perfect positioning of the horse, and the lovely handling of the black-and-white tonality make this an excellent image. Artfully seen and skillfully captured. This is a good work. Keep it up.

The strong, bold, graphic geometric shapes and lines have been artfully photographed to create a near-abstract image. The sublime colour palette works a treat, too. The precision of the composition gives this otherwise ordinary stairwell a transcendental vibe. Good work!

Wow, it doesn't get much more mundane than drying socks on a washing line. However, the photographer has managed to make a wonderfully engaging image. Thanks in part to the vibrant yellow, strong shadows and contrast which have been beautifully balanced and skillfully captured. It feels like a musical sock score. Clever stuff.
