The warming light adds an instant appeal to this well thought out composition and capture. The inclusion of the small child in the doorway adds instant realism and a feeling of actually being there when the shot was taken. The shadows from the overhanging lines and tiles adds further interest and makes one what to delve deeper and deeper into the image. An excellent image which works so very well in colour.
An image which immediately gives one a feeling of being there. The light has been captured perfectly allowing one to pick out key components of the image. The photographers decision to shoot in portrait format is inspiring, giving the viewer a further understanding of the environment in which the shot was captured. The colour processing has been done very well which again really brings out the best of the available light. Great image with heaps of personal appeal.
An image which instantly makes me what to be there and soak up the atmosphere and culture. Although the light is very harsh in areas one is still allowed to gain a true feeling and understanding of the area. For me the colour is the best option as I feel that a monochrome conversion would destroy the this warm and welcoming image.
A very beautiful and rather emotive image with many hidden scenarios or stories to be unfolded. The point of view works well in allowing ones attention to be drawn towards the main subject, whilst the chosen aperture of f/2.8 has provided one with a wonderfully soft surrounding without distorting the detail beyond recognition. Great image with lots of personal appeal.
An image which has instant personal appeal. The monochrome processing gives one a true feeling of those grey days spent growing up in the North East of England. Superbly composed and captured from a well thought out point of view. The inclusion of the drain cover is inspired breaking up the cobbled stones and giving one a great focal point upon which start ones journey up the alley and into the past.
I love the warmth and feel to this image. The beautiful mediterranean light and wonderfully fresh pastel colours and pristine white walls make me yearn to be there. The chosen point of view and portrait format gives the image first height then perspective with the pathway taking one effortlessly into the heart of the image. An excellent wish I was there image.
This image made me smile and for me that is a good thing. The scooter makes for the perfect tool to navigate the very narrow alleyways of the location in which the image was captured. A very well thought out image which in turn has been very well observed, composed, exposed and captured. The post processing has been done sympathetically without destroying the integrity of the original image.
An image which for me tells a story of grief, pain and hardship. The lady is stooped low almost dragging herself up the steep incline of the alleyway. to who knows where. The monochrome processing lends itself to the feeling of pain and sorrow very well in this excellent image capturing just one painful moment in this women life.
An image which for me ticks all the right boxes. Yes there are areas which are over exposed but the light and inclusion of the three pigeons makes the image work. The point of view and composition allows one to be drawn into the image and the shadowy detail beyond. An image which in my opinion would only work in monochrome.
Urban art of graffiti which every you see it it is everywhere. This shot has captured perfectly the artists in residence with also giving one a taste of the environment in which the artists work. My only criticism would be the exposure in the harsh areas of light. One might have considered using a technique called bracketing, then merging the three or more images together to produce a more balanced image.

It is the style of processing that made me want to explore this image further. The soft matte light and the almost chalky shadows give this image a wonderful softness that appeals greatly. My only criticism would that I would have like to have seen some interaction between people or even a dray dog direct the alleyway.
In image which in my opinion deserves to be recognised. It innately reminds me of the images that one would see of worn torn Europe during and following the Second World War. The elderly gentlemen fighting his way through the debris that litters the alleyway evokes so many emotions, which for me makes this image work. Great photography.

Coming from the North East of England I spent many many great times as a kid playing football or cricket in its many back lanes and alleys. Today's back lanes and alleys seem to have lost that attraction, all too often they are filled with abandoned cars, wheelie bins or discarded waste from unscrupulous fly-tippers. For this challenge, you are being asked to photograph an alley or back lane in your local neighbourhood. Things to consider might include, atmosphere, light and silhouetted forms. Good luck.
I love this wonderfully atmospheric monochrome which really makes me want to explore further. The glowing street lamps add a wonderful glow to an otherwise rather eerie and haunting image. For me this image would have ticked all the boxes if there was a lone figure or a couple in silhouette walking below the light source.
An image which immediately grabbed my attention, captured from a well thought out point of view. The image immediately tells me a story. The discarded needles in front of the abandoned chair, a place to sit or a place to get high. The monochrome processing works well in giving one a true feeling of this ever increasing social problem.
The post processing works well in adding to the feel and mood of the location of the shot. Capturing the image in the portrait format adds instant height and again allows one to get a better feel for the location. The inclusion of the lone figure adds further interest and softens what could have been a more eerie and haunting image.
Just as I remember a back lane to be like. The back to back houses and the cobbled alley ways, with the outside lavvies instantly adding further appeal. The inclusion of the cat is a bonus with the monochrome processing taking me back to a time long before digital media. An image which I have enjoyed looking at and commenting on.
Initially I would have liked to have seen this image in monochrome, however upon further reflection "please excuse the pun" , the warm and inviting colours need to be shown in all there glory. The low point of view has shown me evidence that the photographer has thought about the composition and taken all necessary steps to to ensure that the wonderful reflections on the sodden pavement are included in the shot. A real pleasure to view.
An image which immediately grabbed my attention not only because it fits the brief perfectly, but because of its location and childhood memories of kicking a football down similar locations in the North East. I am so very glad that the photographer decided to stick with colour, as iI believe that a lot of the detail would have been lost. The discarded waste, the wonderfully coloured wheelie bin and the soft pastel colours of the houses instantly freshen up this otherwise quite depressing scene. The barbed wire on top of the walls tells me that the area is a target for criminal activity, and allows me to engage further with the image.
Although this image is attractive, I am in the opinion that it has been overworked. The emergence of HDR in the past has been a revelation to a lot of photographers, however there are very good examples and there are very bad examples. I would have loved to have seen this in a well worked contrasty monochrome.
I very well worked image which has been very well composed and exposed. The Archway and steps make for an excellent frame in which to contain the main subject. The cat sat on the steps having a good old scratch adds further interest and appeal. The colour processing works very well and is in my opinion a wise choice as I feel that monochrome would mask a lot of detail.
An image which chills me to the bone. It instantly reminded me of the war torn streets of Germany and Poland. The piled snow again reminding me of the terrible winter conditions that were common place throughout Europe during the Second World War. The style of post processing works very well in maintaining that chilling and almost haunting feel. Great image.
