What a fantastic carving to show the beauty and the flexibility of wood, and what one can make of it. The texture of the surface mimics skin perfectly, as does some lovely soft directional lighting used by the photographer. I loved the simplicity of this shot and subject, with lovely space to the side and above the hand. Works very well in black and white too, and great answer to this brief.
There have been many shots taken of upturned boats near Lindisfarne castle, but for this brief, I thought this shot works very well. As it's in black and white, it has given us some great texture to examine on the boat's surface. I like how the photographer has kept the top of the boat in line with Lindisfarne castle in the background. Lovely sky too, and impressive to be taken on a phone.
This image grabbed my attention. A great landscape, taken at the momentus sunrise moment when the light just starts touching the subject matter. But not only that, it also shows the wooden fence and gate which is coming into shot from the left. Nicely taken using F/22 so all is in focus, and using an 16-35mm lens which is ideal for landscape shots.
I always like to see built structures with human interaction, and this shot captures this really well. The old wooden pier as the main focus and background, and silhouetted figures in foreground. Not sure why there is so much inconsistent blur on sea in the foreground, but liked the strong structure of the pier pieces.
A magically atmospheric capture of a man standing and gazing out across a landscape. The wood in this instance framing the scene and providing the man a spot to stand and look. I love the very low misty cloud covering the sun. The man standing very still with a shutter speed of 1/13th of a sec. Great shot.
Another one of my favourites from this competition, this interior view showing a very impressive chapel, its roof and supporting trusses etc, the organ, the seating, all made of wood. Taken dead centre to show off the perfect symmetry of the room. Nicely done. The camera titling slightly upwards, but not too much to cause too much distortion.
This image intrigued me, and I wondered where it was taken. I really like the mood, and to see the lonely tree growing in the only light source in the centre. The floor seems very dusty, which adds to the atmosphere. I love the pillars all being different lengths and with different bottom parts. Taken at ISO 100, great, with a decent focal length of F/9. Nice shot.

No society would be where it is without wood. It has given us shelter, allowed us to travel and transport goods by sea, road and rail, and to cultivate land. And, of course, it has provided warmth, and so much more. With this brief, it's a case of looking around us and observing the impact wood has made on our lives‚ be it functional or decorative. Use your images to show your appreciation for the skills, creativity and craftsmanship behind pieces that are made of wood, and allow the viewer to see something new in what might be an everyday object such as a serving dish, a spade handle, a chair, or a wooden building.
