Remembrance

September 2025

Wonderful use of layering and perspective here! I love seeing the juxtaposition between the city lights and the cemetery lanterns, with a thin strip of trees in between. The lone figure with the umbrella also catches my eye and helps draw me through the frame. Great job!

Great job capturing this intimate moment and at the same time, doing so in a way that tells the story of a broader tragedy. In addition to the grief conveyed by the woman’s body language, the seemingly endless rows of coffins powerfully illustrate the enormity of the war and the ongoing task of recovering bodies.

Wow, such an effective use of layering here! Great job capturing this emotional moment and framing it with the innocent face of a child, who is likely oblivious to the grief around her. Nice lighting, too; my eye is immediately drawn to the pained expression of the mourner.

Remembrance is the act of remembering that which has passed. We remember those who have died, by marking their graves, erecting memorials, displaying pictures and reminders, and in public services. We do this privately, and we do it collectively, recalling those who were lost in wartime, or as a result of tragedies.

Such a creative and effective way to represent loss, the passage of time, and remembrance. The empty outlines of the absent frames are powerful, speaking to life once lived in this space and faded memories. I love the geometry of this image too. Well done!

Powerful image, made even moreso by its presentation in black and white. The candles and phone flashlights create a sea of lights and illuminated faces, which really draws my eye through the frame. Great contextual layering, as well, with the “We Are Here For Them” text in the foreground. Well done!

Wow, what a powerful image, and a unique interpretation of remembrance—not only of people, but of landscapes and habitats lost. Nice job capturing this moment between parent and child, and framing the pair against the desolate landscape. A strong reminder of the perils of climate change. Well done!

Beautiful shot. Great attention to lighting and detail; the reflections work well together with the textured names of service members to create a layered portrait of loss and remembrance. I like that the Washington Monument is visible in the background as well. Well done!

Wonderful visual parallels and symbolism here! The red of the soldier's uniform is quite similar in hue to that of the poppies surrounding him. Like the flowers, he, too, stands in a display of honor and remembrance of the service people represented. Great job!

Great job illustrating scale and capturing the moment here! I love seeing the difference in size between the person in the wheelchair and the massive Marine Corps War Memorial. The black-and-white presentation also works well and makes the salute more noticeable. Well done!

Wow, great job capturing such a unique gravesite! In addition to portraying a striking place, the photo is well composed and balanced, with the rows of colorful figures offsetting the plainer inset graves. I’m curious about the history of the cliffside site; are people entombed here because of longstanding cultural practice, or do environmental factors also play a role?

Great use of framing and detail in this image! The Queen's silhouette in the foreground works well to give context to this somber scene and draws the eye back into layers of emotion and activity. I love being able to see the range of expressions on everyone's faces, too. Well done!

I love the textured appearance of this image! The concrete blocks in the background and the poppies in the foreground create interesting layers of abstraction. The flowers almost look like a red shag carpet that I can reach out and touch. Great attention to detail!

Beautiful image. The juxtaposition between the upright figures in the memorial and the figure slumped on the bench is quite telling. The fact that this is a silhouette and we cannot see details puts greater emphasis on body language, effectively conveying loss, mourning, and remembrance. Well done!

Lovely image. The soft and mottled lighting works well to create a sense of tenderness for lives lost. Great focus on details, as well; I love that I can read the individual names, and the memorial feels much more personal this way. The drooping roses are an effective touch, too.

Nice job with layering and perspective here! I love the pairing of the rows of headstones in the foreground with the stand of tall trees in the background; it’s an interesting and rather symbolic visual relationship. The image has a lovely spring color palette and lighting, as well.

I love the layers of visual information in this image. This steel plant isn’t exactly known for a stellar safety record, so it seems ironic and rather symbolic that worker headstones overlook it. Great job with composition, framing, and storytelling.
