Stained Glass

April 2025

I love the disorienting nature of this image, created due to the shot being taken from below, and the stained-glass windows drawing us to the off-centre cross. This keeps me returning to look at this image again and again. Great work!

This is a good composition with a strong symmetry and contrast in light and dark, which enhances the fiery stained-glass window. One suggestion that would be to use a tripod in low light situations to help focal ability, and you will achieve a lot with that piece of equipment.

The diagonal composition of this image with its focus on the diagonal lines crisscrossing the image plane draws the eye across the whole image. This in turn gives a sense of the architectural grandeur and scale of the stained-glass ceiling of the hotel. Well done!!

This is a really evocative in this image that caught my eye. Not only is the stained-glass window clear and colourful, but the colourful and speckled reflection on the stone wall creates a rhythm to the composition that draws one in. Definitely dancing colours! Well done!

I find this image extremely compelling due to the haunting composition where the girl is standing close behind the one who is reading. Also, the black lines not only frame the image, but also allude to the folds of the dress.

You have created a strong sense of mystery and intrigue in this image, as one tries to work out how the central colourful stained-glass window relates to the muted tones of the background. This in turn makes me feel for the central figures.

This is a wonderful abstract image of colourful stained-glass that really demonstrates the wide breadth of what can constitute stained-glass. The image challenges the idea that stain-glass is simply devotional church windows, but can encompass richly colourful and imaginative abstract works.

Simply beautiful.

This composition has everything one would want from an image of a stained-glass window.

The central window is clear, colourful, and detailed. The inclusion of surrounding elements of the statue, candles, seats, and pillars ground the image in the sense that one feels like they can walk right into the church and view the stained-glass window themselves.

Very impressive!

I adore the strong use of colour to frame the individual elements of this photograph. The yellow and oranges of the foreground, followed by blues and red of the border, frame the yellow of the background. This means that the central figure in red pops in the image, as well as appears to be within a sense of perspective.

The composition in this image is very good indeed, as the flags and fan vaulting frame the majestic stain-glass window at Westminster Abbey. Furthermore, taking the image from below and looking up to the window gives a strong devotional feeling to this photograph.

This image is extremely strong because there is symmetry and order in the composition. This means that one is able to follow the narrative of each of the six stained-glass panels, which harkens back to the original purpose of the stained-glass windows is to tell stories.

There is a real sense of the fragility and delicacy in this image. The use of black negative space brings out the subtle colours of the stain glass, which in turn really draws out the two central figures and makes one ask what is the connection and relationship between the two.

I love the choice of a stained-glass window in a non-devotional space, which is a fresh take on the brief. What also drew me to this image is the reflections from the stained-glass on the mottled and burnished walls, which echos the strong geometric design. This draws one into the image. Well done!!

Stained glass, that magical element in so many places of worship, provides a unique challenge for the photographer. How to capture that breathtaking show of backlit colour, whilst balancing it with its darker surroundings, and composed appropriately? When done well, it can (almost) be as good as being there in the flesh.

The choice of taking the photograph of the stained-glass from the side was an inspired one, as this enhances the abstract arrow-like shape of these windows, as well as framing the central pedestal in the centre of the chapel. Great composition!

I adore this image, as one constantly has to try to discern what is the glass panel and what is the reflection of the stained-glass window. This visual allusion keeps the viewer's attention and means that one keeps finding new elements in the image.
